No need to reed. Get yourself a recorder, and play it back.

My reed on my clarinet was chipped but it turned out it had no effect on my playing ability. I liked my little Hohner recorder years later. It didn’t have a reed to break or the range to murder. It was $3. I see it is now $6. Well worth it.

I bought a second one so I would have one handy. Sometimes when stuck in traffic in New Orleans I would pull one out and play it. Very calming. Very nice. No idea why people around me rolled up their windows.

They were so cheap I had the owner of the music shop order me a bass recorder also made out of ABS plastic, thinking maybe ten dollars or so. He couldn’t tell ahead of time.

When it came, it was around $36 or $46, I forget. It wasn’t that I couldn’t afford it. I just hadn’t set my mind in that range. I told the owner if it was okay with him, put it up for sale for a few days and if he hadn’t sold it to someone else by next week, I would pay for it as I had agreed. My mind would have had time to adjust. He agreed and didn’t mind waiting 7 days or so to get his money.

I happened to go by the next day. It was gone already. The Morgan City band director had been thrilled when he saw it of such quality and low price. I was glad for all three of us.

It took me a few days to think, “It might have been well worth it to me too.” Years went by before I priced one again. I think it had gone up to $250 or so by then. And I still wonder and think, “It might still be well worth it.” Maybe before another 42 years go by, I will decide.

    (Maybe not, still thinking…)
