In the immersive gallery, the exhibit includes the crackle and smoke of a wood fire, the trickling of cooling water and dripping distillate, and a gasping voice rasping out the traditional “Smooth!”.
At the end of the exhibit’s run, it will be realistically demolished by a team of performance artists dressed as “revinooers”.
The trick is to keep the boiler temps as close above 180 deg F as you can keep it. Ethyl- and methyl- Alcohols boil at 180 F, so as the temps get warmer and closer to the BP of water, the alcohol gets diluted.
I grew up near W Va and I ‘still’ remember my first taste of moonshine. And even tho it was mixed with orange juice (it was called Orange So Good), it not only burned all the way down, it ‘buzzed me good’. One glass and people were passing out, lol.
You can see how the artists distilled the essence of the experience by subtle use of alcohol-based paints. The symbolism is also subtle. The lab coat always denotes the seriousness of the enterprise, the open flame shows the hazards involved and the variety of tubing emphasizes the flow and draws the eye across the canvas. If it also makes you thirsty, the artist has truly elicited a reaction. :)

You’re still the one that makes me laugh
Still the one that’s my better half
We’re still having fun
And you’re still the one

I’d like to say a bunch of things about this and then say “I still don’t get it.” – but I think I do, so I won’t say that.
