The most amazing part of this strip is that Michael is actually having a verbal (no thought balloon) conversation with Martha where they are not mad at each other for some trivial reason.
Hah, wow- this and Calvin & Hobbes are basically doing the same kind of strip today- someone on the phone with their significant other, while a child they’re babysitting is being a brat to them.
The phone technology described was a great improvement. I remember when we didn’t even have a telephone, and when we did it hung on the wall and had a crank to ring central (one long ring) or various shorts and longs for others on the party line. Our first number was 4 on 40, ie 4 short rings on line 40.
Our number was 15 on 39, a long and three shorts. It was a party line of course, you could pick up and listen on any other calls. That was called rubbernecking.
To top this discussion remember once upon a time people wrote ( In fancy Cursive) love notes and letters, sometimes on expensive scented pages great expressions of their love for one another…How do you think you came to be?…..anyway?….Some damn fool invented the telephone and screwed the whole system up..

Funny you should ask, Richard. It’s for strangling you if you don’t plug it back in and get your buttocks back into bed lickity split.

When cell-phones started becoming popular, I’m many people thought back to moments just like this!

Maybe I missed something – could Michael not just plug the cord in and call Martha back?

It is the intelligent, creative ones that cause the most trouble. Of course any society that gets rid of its troublemakers is going downhill.
