This is (to me) the first I ever seen Nancy wearing pants, aside from shorts when she’s doing physical activities.

Let’s consolidate a bit: how does everyone feel about Olivia’s first Sunday strip?

Going to the phone also makes her put her foot in the same place every time. Something that could have been put in three panels.

I’m glad we finally got an Olivia James Nancy Sunday strip. I’m getting more and more used to the new format.

Well, I guess you can find a new excercise routine if you look hard enough. I’m surprised Fritzi didn’t yell for her to go back to bed! All that walking can be annoying to hear.

I see that the new cartoonist is keeping up the long tradition of Nancy being completely unfunny.

Overall a funny Sunday effort! But, I am wondering why she seems to have a somewhat grumpy expression through all the night travel? I would imagine if she is choosing to keep her phone ON and keep it DOWNSTAIRS at night…. then she would be more “ok” with going up and down and up and down. To me, it would seem she would either have a more neutral, tired expression… or if it did make her grumpy, she could shut her phone off or take it back upstairs. A minor point, I guess, but her grumpy expression confuses me a bit today.

On second glance, I guess her expression IS somewhat neutral. So, I retract my earlier “grumpy” question and changed my rating. Good effort!

I am fascinated by the creepy-crawly at the top right of that center panel. I thought it was on my computer screen at first, but it even moves a little. Very interesting.

That’s it! After 66 years of following Nancy I’m done. The substandard artwork is the pits and not worth wasting 3-5 minutes of my morning time. RIP Nancy, the memories in my mind will keep you alive forever.

    LOVE the new Sunday strip!

I would like to point out: if you look closely at the table/drawer you will notice that it is not completely coloured (yes I spell with a U)… there are gaps. Obviously this is yet another truly astounding comment by Olivia: Some people do not feel that with her at the wheel that Nancy is complete anymore, like the colour job. But still she persists: the night stand appears 5 times in the strip, while still having gaps. Olivia is persistent… with a will to IMPROVE! Wonderful, Olivia! It is all so clear.

I’m not sure if I am seeing exactly what you are referring to, but if you are noticing gaps adjacent to a black line, those are probably the unavoidable artifacts that accompany a compression algorithm. The colorist works on a very high resolution file with razor sharp black lines. Those regions in the table art would be clearly enclosed shapes that would be filled with a Photoshop bucket paint bucket tool that take the color right to the edge. Afterwards, somewhere deep in the bowels of Universal GoComics dark operations that colored file is run through a PhotoShop Action that reduces the size and changes the file format from .tiff (a print friendly format) to .jpg or .png format which are common web friendly image formats. In an ideal setting, the blacks pretty much retain their visual crispness (close inspection usually yields a bit of fuzziness) and everybody is happy. But image file compression involves various forms of pixel averaging and I suspect that because the fill is a dark brown, it is a bit too close to black so in some areas the inegrity of the black linework was compromised as was the fill color. What matters is that at normal viewing distance and screen resolution the strip looks OK.

Despite the appearance of using one drawing and flipping it, there are subtle differences. The light and shade varies, especially on her face and the dots on her nightwear seem to be applied at random. The light “rays” also vary. Each one is drawn individually. But it still doesn’t make it good or funny.

After the obvious success which the Nancy owners had with Gilchrist at the helm – I am sort of surprised that they would go along with this totally FLAT Nancy for any length of time. At least all the panels are colored – even the totally black middle panel. Some of the cartoonists apparently believe it is cute to have one panel which is totally yellow, one which is totally green – and another which is totally pink or blue. In that case, I find it easier to read the cartoons which are in black and white. For example, BroomHilda on Go Comics is always in black and white – but when I read the SAME cartoon on other sites – the panels are all colored in – for example, on other web sites, if Broomhilda is sitting under a tree – the OTHER sites will have a brown tree with green leaves, a blue sky and green grass at the base of the tree! I have pretty much given up on Dad’s Home. In the first place, most of the jokes aren’t very funny – then the monochromatic panels make it difficult to read. Hate to see Nancy caught in this trap. Currently, the NANCY CLASSICS are so obviously so much better. At this point, of course, that is also true of BC – BC classic is also are more readable strip. Gilchrist frequently responded to the comments – always a very gracious fellow. Guess time will tell if the new cartoonist plans to follow in his footsteps!

A decent gag, to be sure. (You wonder many kids would get a “step count” gag.) 3 panels doing the work of 8; just don’t get into “Life in Hell” or “World’s Angriest Dog” mode.

I’m not an expert on Nancy and I shouldn’t have to be. A strip is funny or it’s not. This strip is not. It has become devoid of subtlety or depth. The new artwork I can live with but not the lack of humor.

I think this may be the first time I’ve laughed out loud at a Nancy strip … like … ever. Partly because I’m the guy who sets my default printer to the one clear on the other side of the office for the sole purpose of bumping my step count.

i get this strip all too well. i wish i could go the rest of my life without hearing about anyone’s “step count” or “getting their steps in” again. tracking steps has been part of the company that i work for’s “wellness” incentive program which they started a few years ago so I’ve been hearing coworkers talk about step count ever since then. it is such a drag to hear people talk about even when I’m not involved in the conversation. please, Nancy, don’t talk about “step count” anymore. lol. or i suppose she could start living out everyone’s fantasy of strapping their synched fitness tracker to the ceiling fan or dog to inflate their step count.
