Sigh, back so soon to Luann and Fay. The Tiffany vs Ann cliffhanger is fading down the horizon unsolved. And I already know this week’s arc will be all about Axel so I am bored already.
Maybe sometime Evans can actually show us these performances instead of this “skip past it, and then assure us afterward that everyone absolutely loved it” nonsense (which reeks of what TV Tropes calls “Character Shilling”). Though at least he didn’t do as he did with the Fuse Follies and devote weeks of story buildup within the strip before breezing right past it.
Fay? I hate to tell you this, but if Axel hadn’t asked YOU for a date by this time, well…..,
I honestly don’t see how Luann is gonna help you here, unless she tell you what NOT to do by regaling you with tales of her futile pursuit of this “Aaron Guy”…..,
Is Greg regretting aging Luann to college age that he’s resurrecting the beloved Luann of the old in Fay? It seems so seeing that Greg is struggling with arcs for the college-aged Luann crew, never finishing the arcs, so he keeps going back to Fay because the arcs are simpler.
Tread carefully Lu. You got Mom to stand down in re: the play. But this might re-activate all the defense mechanisms! And besides, Fay, Lu probably isn’t the best source of dating advice, is she?
Faye may think she’s ready for her next role as Axel’s girlfriend. But is he ready for that? And, if Luann does agree to help, how are they going to get Faye’s overprotective mother to get on board?
Contrary to some posters here, I don’t mind at all going back to the Luann and Fay string. I think the emphasis on Luann, and how she dynamically, and positively reacts to others in her life, Jack and Fay, is a central part of the whole strip, and that picking up the story of other arcs is part of the dramatic suspense that makes this strip so addictive. Yes I agree that Fay is an updated, 21st century version of Luann at the same age, with the only difference being that Axel really does like Fay, SO MUCH, but is totally clueless how to reciprocate. Luann has experience so we see. It will be interesting to see how Luann’s putative romance with Jack progresses, while at the same time, her mentee’s romance with Axel does. Axel is a 21st century prepubescent teen boy, so get over all you old fogies!!!
Fay was fixed awfully fast. She went from shy girl to lead in the play and impressing her mother almost immediately. I thought Evans would drag this out a bit, making her at least a little unsuccessful.
While having Luann and Fay for this week is “ok”, and while I am glad that the play and Fay’s part in it went well… I do hope that Luann does not actively embroil herself in helping Fay “get a date” with Axel. However, I believe my hope is only a sadly ephemeral pipe dream. Fay’s mother clearly stated that she did not want Luann giving “dating advice” to Fay. And since Luann and Fay interact in a mentor/mentee relationship set up by Fay’s mother, Luann needs to respect these wishes. But, for comedic potential…. I suspect we will have a week of Luann giving boy advice to Fay.
1. If Luann is determined to give “dating advice” to Fay, she needs to discuss and get the ok to do so with Fay’s mother, first. If Luann convinces Fay’s mother that it is ok…. then I think this would be a good way go, but not until Luann talks with Fay’s mother.
2. I also would like to see Fay try to approach this more carefully too. She is well aware that her mother specifically said “no” to this sort of interaction between her and Luann. And, granted, she is still a kid. But, I think she is old enough and mature enough of a kid to be able to do this in a better way…. by having both Fay and Luann talk to Fay’s mother together. I think the level of maturity that would entail would be a potential winning factor for Fay to get her mother to allow this.
Late to the game, something like 134 comments already.
Good news: Back to Fay (I have come to like this character)
Bad news: It’s clear that Evans wants to match her up with Axel, a boy that was dragged into the Luannverse along with Fay, probably intended to be her boyfriend all along.
I’m still not sure Fay is old enough for dating…
(But what do I know? I’m that guy who believes that “with benefits” ought to wait for the honeymoon night)
I think JPuzz has pointed out something critical. A lot of these arcs share the issue of ‘problems with parents’. Tiffany and her father (and who knows what happened with her mother). Fay and her mother (and who knows what happened with the father). Both Gunther and Les having strained relationships with mother and missing fathers and sharing the problem of Mr. Gray; Luann’s mother seemingly distraught at the idea that her daughter sees a nude man…
Let me join Tiffany in orbit for a moment. Since Tiff’s dad is such a vagabond stud, and we have not seen Fay’s daddy around, it’s possible that Fay could be Tiff’s half sister drawn to the stage and to boys because it is in the Farrell genes. The two girls would have a ball hitting the cosmetics counters together.
It was a school play, right? Which means it was filled with other students? When was the last time one of these didn’t get a standing ovation at pretty much every performance?
Gee, when Fay’s interests (in her theatre sessions) stray to Axel, Luann (and the Evans) push her back to the more important goal of theatre and acting. When Luann is in art class (figure drawing), the Evans (so far) have made the goal be that of Luann distracted by a nude Jack followed by Luann on a date with Jack. Forget the drawing.
I’m not sure why so many people find the story of Fay boring. Maybe they just have naturally grumpy dispositions. Her budding into teenagerhood romantic angst is cute, and it gives Luann a chance to show (one hopes) some maturity….
My how time flies in Luannverse. No rehearsals shown, play is over already? Ridiculous. Though I am grateful because anything with Fay bores me. So how long ago has the whole Tiff/Ann rumble been? Timelines just don’t make sense.

So Fay is taking over the ‘boy-crazy’ role that Luann used to play? Just when Luann is trying for a more balanced life herself…

Luann apparently doesn’t know anything about Annie if she thinks Fay could play the lead. The lead character is like ten years old.
