He and Will Rogers would make for a great Presidential ticket…..Kurt Vonnegut for Secretary of State,,,…You now, I think God turned over the reins to Kurt for a while here…….The world outside my window looks a lot like the inside of a Kurt Vonnegut novel…..
I see the trolls had to come out and make this political. Go ahead, keep watching CBS, but please don’t expect me to suck up the political propaganda they spew…..or the BS from commenters that have to make a great Sunday comic about dog heaven a political platform.
Thanks, I miss our two dogs, but, I know they are waiting for me…probably busy hassling our cats, too! (There wasn’t any meanness in it, but the playfulness wasn’t always to our cat’s liking!)
Easily the best comic of the day. You really touched me. I pray to God that when I shuffle off this mortal coil that my beloved Buddy will be waiting to greet me along with the Son of God and my family.
For the TZ fans, the episode sought is The Hunt, with Arthur Hunnicutt as the old man: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunt_(The_Twilight_Zone)Its a tribute to the power and quality of the show that so many remember. For Mark Twain, now I’m remembering Letters from the Earth.
There’s a story of a most faithful Hindu man who refuses his ascension into Heaven because his dog is not allowed. At that moment his dog turns into Dharma, the God of Righteousness, and having past his final test of being faithful to his dog, the man makes his ascension. http://www.hinduhumanrights.info/dogs-in-hinduism/
Mark Twain also said, ""Heaven goes by favor; if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in." And if you want to read a really funny story that pokes holes in our illusions of heaven, read Twain’s Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven.
I think the main point of this is that the joyous celebration is because he is finally able to shed his failing body. The dogs are just to point out that he goes to a happy afterlife, not into a “nothing” hole in the ground.
Readers might enjoy “Dog in the Sky: the Authentic and Unexpurgated Adventures of Runyon Jones,” by Norman Corwin, if you can find a copy, It’s the tale of a young boy’s pursuit of his pet through all the intricacies of the afterlife.
I don’t see hope as viable since it can easily change to false hope. But that for another time. I don’t want to dampen the feelings of those around me. I like dogs but prefer cats. But haven’t had a cat in a long time and probably never will. Costs too much now.
No matter what “damnfool” things you do in the course of any given day, unkind, mean acts for which there are no excuses, there, at the door, when you return home is your faithful friend. All forgiving and thrilled to see you. It’s like being given another chance to make something better of yourself.
This strip was comforting to our family as we gathered around my 90 yr old, dog-adoring father on what would be his last day after a month in home hospice. We were all very moved by it. Thank you, Mr. Miller ❤️
This caught me unaware Sunday morning. My son died unexpectedly at age 48 in May. I spent the morning praying it was true. Weeping silently. Wiley, you are something else
Personally I believe if there’s a Heaven, then all beings go to Heaven, some just have to take a longer route than others, I don’t believe in the idea of Hell, but Purgatory seem probable if a afterlife exist, because nothing deserve to suffer forever, but a lot of beings sure need a lot of rehabilitation, before they can be let into Heaven, without diluting what’s Heavenly about the place.
27 June, 2021. I received word that a friend of mine had passed after a long illness, and I found this strip on the first internet search I did after receiving the news. Wayne had always loved his dogs, and this strip brought me to tears, that he would be reunited with his canine friends. This morning I received an email from a memorial site asking for remembrances of this fellow. I looked this up to verify the date for a reference in my comment there. Thank you, Wiley, for this simple but powerful strip, more comforting than any sympathy card could have been.

That reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode where the guy refused to go into Heaven because he couldn’t bring his dog in with him.
It turned out that it was actually hell, not heaven. The real heaven was glad to accept any dog.

Yes, Twain had a great respect for dogs. But if you want to know what Twain really thought about man, read A Dog’s Tale.

I have no idea why God put dogs on this planet, but we can learn a lot from them.

It reminds me of one of Kenneth Patchen’s poems:
" Elephants and Eskimos
are the sort of inventions
makes me sure
that god has a couple three-four kids

“The more I know of men, the more I like my dog.” Twain had quite a bit to say about the two.

One person’s Hell is another’s Heaven. Living next to a family with 4 yappie dogs and a rottweiler, a Doberman and two Pitbulls is hell…
