According to Wikipedia, the inspiration for adults not seeing Snuffy was a 60 Minutes program on pedophilia at a Bronx daycare center. Sort of takes the humor out of the cartoon’s punchline.
Adults never saw the Snuffleupagus at the beginning. He would walk away and then Big Bird would describe him. Then, the creators decided that this approach sent a bad message to children and Snuffy met the adults.
Gee, the things you learn by watching TV, and reading these comics. A friend of mine had a dog named Snuffleupagus but I never knew where that name came from. I guess I leapfrogged over the Sesame Street era.
This is pretty mild compared to what would happen if HBO made Sesame Street more like their typical shows. (Seriously though, kudos to HBO for basically funding the show and letting PBS still broadcast the eps for free, if I understand the deal correctly – basically there’s just a token exclusive period or some such.)

And as a bonus, Kermit’s legs were the best he’d ever had.
