I’m reminded of my last eye exam. I am fluent and literate in Spanish, and my pronunciation is very good – I don’t,( I’m told,) have a gringo accent. But because I learned my spoken Spanish “on the street” I never mastered the pronunciation of the alphabet correctly.
I have to stop and think before pronouncing a single letter in Spanish. It got to be a comedy of errors at the optometrist’s office, since, of course, he spoke no English.
Fortunately, aside from the dreaded Eye Chart, the otheer exams were more definitive and we were able to get through them without laughing ourselves silly
