It’s the “Say what you will…” part that gets me. “I’ll excuse anything as long as he does something I agree with.” How does that work in their lives? “…where she reviewed her Honor Guard for the first time in 70 years, they tell me.” Is lying to have something to brag about excusable in their children, family or friends?

“Say what you will” is like a pre-emptive “but”.

When you say “but,” you’re saying “please ignore everything I just said in the first half of this sentence.”

When you say “say what you will,” you’re saying “I will ignore a counter-argument no matter how much evidence you have.”

I remember how pissed off “conservatives” used to get when people said “say what you will” about Obama; it’s rather ironic that Trump gets “say what you will” even more, and now it pisses off the “liberals”.

And now they’re both pissed off at me, because self-awareness is the rarest commodity in political discourse today.

Yes, the mom is a trump supporter and lives in a trailer. Because the working class needed a champion so they hired someone who was born a millionaire and opposes anything that would help the working poor, such as Head Start or Affordable Health Care, all while cutting taxes for millionaires.

… the right wing FAKE News propaganda machine is too strong for Trump supporters to be turned by just a Sunday Doonesbury strip…

    … but maybe if new a Doonesbury ran 7 days a week…

from where I sit the question was “would you rather have a lie that lifts you up? or a truth that holds you in contempt?” Trailer park communities aren’t bad places to live, depends on the neighbor’s and who is inside the trailer. Single family homes are the same way.

Learning young to be close-minded. When they get older they will silence Grandma or drive her out of the room.— With the level of invective in this country, it would perhaps be better if we split the nation, so that the liberal ends of it can govern themselves as they please, and brag that they are and what they are doing is so much better than the middle.

…b2, since I am trolling here today, you have a point. The kids should humour grandma. Politeness should be taught…but I find it ironic that you hold these characters to a higher standard than the right wing prejudice grandma…

… I think that is the point the cartoon is trying to make…

So, the moral lesson here is to teach your kids to not engage with a dissenting opinion, and walk out of the room, automatically confident that your truth is impermeable?

The moral lesson is to keep your children from being exposed to a very poor role model, in the case of trump. All of the presidents have had their flaws, just not to such an extent as we see with trump, who seems to go on and on in terms of negative behavior.

The kids aren’t avoiding grandma, they are avoiding trump. Trump is kind of a freak as potuses go. Offensive and rude behavior can’t be explained as conservative or simply another POV. Trump is not ok. He engaged in behavior which also made him an illegitimate office holder. Nothing about trump is perfectly ok and as a responsible citizen I can’t act as if it is.

Responsible Republicans should realize that they too could someday be targeted by a foreign government in an election. They should realize they could lose next time it happens and be ok with it since they believe Democrats should be ok with foreign interference and treasonous behavior during an election.

I agree with having the children leave the room. They are far too young to understand anything that will be discussed. When I was a child and the adults wanted to discuss politics, we kids were sent outside or downstairs to play, much to our relief, since we would have been bored to death. Even when I was teenager with some concept of what was going on in the world, I was spared from the fate of being a political target. I visited a foreign country for a summer, right at the height of the Vietnam War. I found out at the end of my visit that the teacher at the school I attended had told the students before I arrived that they were NOT to question me about Vietnam. He said I was 16 years old, I had no control over what my country did, and I was to be left alone about that subject. I am to this day grateful to him for sparing me possible grief in a situation that was a truly wonderful experience that I enjoyed immensely.
