This is exactly what my brother and I did under the same circumstances. Raid the cupboards and make ourselves some coffee which we were not allowed to drink.
I came home from school one day at the age of 11 or 12 and my mother a left a note saying she had gone shopping and wouldn’t be home for 3 hours. I got a sudden idea that I would bake a cake from scratch. I found a recipe for yellow cake and began putting it together and did pretty well except that instead of using flour, I used cake mix! The cake puffed up and overflowed in the oven and smoke was billowing out of the oven. I was out side playing and went inside to check on the progress of my cake and had the presence of mind to turn off the oven and get the cake pan out before burning the house down. My mother had big surprise when she got back. I really didn’t get into much trouble; I think my parents were relieved that it wasn’t a worse disaster.

Reading this a second time, I realize what a bad influence Mike was. It’s amazing Liz survived her childhood with Mike and came out quite fine.

Yeah, I was 12 taking care of my little sister, but didn’t have to make dinner. Amazing how kids are able to stay irresponsible longer now.
