We almost hit one about four or five years ago. Not to mention having seen Snowy Owls on a couple of occasions.Used to be no owls around here, or at least no clear evidence of them. But several years ago began to hear their cries late at night. That does get a little spooky when you’re right around Halloween, especially when it sounds like their right outside your window. Not sure about the species though, have tried listening to owl calls and they don’t sound like barn owls. Sound a little like maybe horned owls.
Puck has a point! Maybe the cuckoo from the clock has gotten to Elvis! And I’m sure an owl has heard of them and they shall hear him soon enough! :D Maybe even on Halloween!
It is very rare I am this early in the comics. Georgia, I enjoy them thoroughly. You do such a wonderful job portraying them, you know the boys very well.
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Healing hugs, thoughts, prayers and positive vibes going out to SkyKey))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Hope your surgery went well and that you are convalescing nicely my friend! ♥ Your comments and wonderful stories about Megan and Tre-C are very much missed!
Our woods are home to several owls. One evening I was out with the dogs and heard what sounded like a conversation….one very deep voiced “HOO, HOO…HOOHOO” and one tiny voiced “Hoo, hoo….hoohoo”. Have only seen one once as I was coming up our switchback road in late afternoon….she was sitting on top of the stump of a wind-felled tree looking just like a calendar page….until one of the dogs barked from the back seat and off she flew.
We also have bald eagles, hawks, very large crows and turkey vultures….I don’t think Puck would like it here.
Good morning and happy Hump Day, orbsters and orbabies! Getting ready to go to the cabin tomorrow afternoon for a Thanksgiving weekend. Never sure what kind of internet access I’ll have up there, so may as well say I’ll be incommunicado from Friday until Monday.
Good morning all! It’s Wednesday, Hump Day, and Big Box Day! The Woman gets a monthly shipment of medical supplies that comes in a box large enough to ship an older-style 19-inch television, and delivery is scheduled for today. I get the look if I break the box down before Ember has had a chance to fully inspect it. It’s also, for the first time in over a month, running night. Have gotten lazy (admittedly depression-induced laziness) about my exercise goals. Since I do better with a goal, I registered for a road race scheduled right before Christmas. Training starts tonight. :-)
we live near a strip of undeveloped land (it’s part of a preserve or something so it will stay undeveloped) and every so often at night and early mornings we can hear at least two perhaps more owls going at it, it sounds like they’re having a regular hootenanny XD (no I’m not sorry).
This is a good opportunity to recommend the book “Wesley The Owl”. I don’t recall the author’s name but it’s just delightful true account of friendship between a person and an owl.
Yes, I’ve seen a bunch of owls, and no, they’re not spooky,
I was surprised to learn that only some species of owls hoot. Others click, or chirp, or purr, or whinny like a horse. Popular culture did not prepare me for that.
My mom was walking at the edge of our woods one day, and a large owl swooped down on her. Her knit hat had a pom-pom, and it thought it was a rabbit tail attached to a rabbit, but it pulled up when it realized its error. That scared the spit out of her. Some owls are big enough to take small cats for prey. My Saint Bernard used to escort my cat down to the barn by walking above him so the owls wouldn’t go after him.
We used to have resident Great Horned Owls at home. This was before we moved to the Wrinkle Farm/Storage Bin 12 miles more to the west. The GHO start to mate and nest in January…where they can have ample access to mice and other rodents wandering around the snow. There was a big old tree, out in the back, which had lost it’s top snapped off in a storm. It was covered in vines, etc. I saw the outline of a GHO in the twilight of the winter evening…when quite suddenly another GHO swooped down and started a “fight”! Well silly me! They weren’t fighting, they were mating…;^) They stayed around for years and I actually found their nest tree a few times. I used to call owls, but not a lot because I didn’t want to scare them away. You could tell which was the dominate GHO because he would start his call right before the end of the other. We had Screech, Barn, Saw-whet, and Barred Owls come around. I’ve heard GHO and Screech around here. TMI?
Where we live in NZ we can sometimes hear the native owl called a Ruru (Morepork in English, named for the sound it makes) at night. I very nice sound to hear.
Sim Update! Sim is going very well and getting back to normal. The swelling around his left eye has gone down a lot and we can start to see the new shape of his head. His head is flatter and a little shorter and his eyes are more slanted that they were, but he is still my pretty little ginger-muffin-babycakes. He is sleeping a lot, but that was always normal for him, and he is begining to talk to us again. He spends as much time on my lap as he can. He is eating with gusto (only soft food at the moment) and id taking his medication like a champ, no complaints. Last night he slept on the bed with us again, the only difference being that he wanted to go under the blanket to sleep next to one of us rather than in the middle.
Owl also regurgitate “owl pellets”, the undigested parts of their prey. They swallow prey whole and spit up the pellets containing teeth, claws, beaks, bones. They are collected and studied in science and biology classes. You can even buy them on Amazon.

Birds are very scary – just ask Tippi Hedren. You still can, she’s 88 and incredible.

Yeah, owls can be frightening… especially in groups.

If you’ve forgotten how terrifying an owl can be to small creatures, reread “The Golden Mouse,” especially:

Query: Why is everybody in the strip whispering today? Is it so as to not disturb any owls?

It is fast becoming clear
That Owl Week is drawing near
No one is safe, remain alert.
Cause they fill the cool night air
And fly around everywhere,
Spread the word, make everyone aware.
We need to spread the news around
No one is safe from Owl Week
We must all spread the word
That it’s all about the bird
Cause everything is spooky with the owls.
