Frazz has, to some degree, just described central Va, in winter. And Caulfield has once again nailed one of the worst of human foibles, i.e., the ability not to enjoy what is around us.
Personally, I think the standard/daylight time thing has run its course and should be pegged at one or the other for good. As many decades as I have faced the changes, they still require serious mental adjustments and are not anticipated with any pleasure.
During prime sunset/sunrise watching temperatures, sunsets happen while you are still awake, and sunrises happen before you wake up.
I have no idea what he’s on about with spring/fall though. I see nary a peep about spring in my Facebook feed (unless it’s something incidental like “springtime means baseball”) but I see so many posts about fall I get tired of it before the season even gets here.
Sunrises are followed by a nice long day now that I am retired. I’ll take October any day – Spring is certainly a lovely awakening but is followed by a long brutally hot summer.
I mentioned this before. I grew up in Chibougamau and we used to walk back from school in total darkness in winter. Bonus was though on warm summer evenings we got to play outside ’till 22h00.
I’m already missing the long days of summer, although the cooler days are better for taking walks. I’ve gone from “we have to hurry up before it gets hot” to “lets wait a little bit for things to warm up”.
First person-third person mish-mash…. Clearly, “I’m already at work” would have worked better. At least it isn’t a mish-mash of singular and plural third person representing an individual (e.g. “if any of them wants to participate, they should get in line”).
Beautiful art work, Jef. The content supports my feeling we should have standard time all year long and put the quietus on DST. As for seasons, they’re all beautiful in their own way. I’m happy to live where there occurs a distinct palette of 4 seasons!
I’m a lifelong Michigander, and my formative years* were spent on the west side of the state. And I felt kind of bad for the people who lived on the east side. They didn’t seem to have the kind of hills we did, for the most part, and while I didn’t live on the shoreline, I was definitely closer to where I could watch the sun set over Lake Michigan than to where I could watch it rise over Lake Huron.
Now I live not only on the eastern side of the state, I live in metropolitan Detroit, something I wasn’t really expecting.
Something, in fact, I had promised myself I’d never do. I’m fine with breaking that promise. It kind of ruined bicycling, but that opened the door to more swimming than I ever thought I’d do. And there are really cool people here, as there have been everywhere I’ve lived. And I’ve learned that there are very few things in life better than watching the sun rise over your open-water swim. And if you really want to feel like you’re in some kind of magical world, there’s that rare day when you watch the big full moon set just before you watch the sun rise. And now, it occurs to me, I might need to head west to swim as the sun sets and the full moon rises.
The spring and fall thing, I’m still working on. And that doesn’t really change with location. Unless I move way south, but that’s something I’ve promised myself I’ll never do. Whatever that’s worth.______________________

One of my roommates in college was a film major, one of the short movies he was doing for a class called for a sunrise, but he just couldn’t get himself up and out of bed early enough to film one, so instead he filmed a sunset and then ran it in reverse to turn it into a sunrise.
I will take the sunrise anytime! I fact I am very fond of being out before Civil Twilight that comes about 26 minutes prior to sunrise. Kinda like the early mornings in the book, Cannery Row.

I don’t pay attention to sunrises because I have no attention span at that time.

Frazz, if you even SEE the sun.

And yet we used to celebrate a departure (say, sending someone off on a journey) while pretty much ignoring the safe return from the same journey.

Has Caulfield ever seen how stunning the flowers are that pop their little heads up from the cold ground to try and lure insects their way?

You can rise with the sun in Daytona Beach, take a ride down I-4, and enjoy the sunset in Tampa.

I arrive at work before sunrise winter and summer, so that part doesn’t matter. But the earlier sunsets in the winter are a bummer.

I really enjoy the Sunday strip artwork. I’m guessing airbrushing is involved. It creates a ‘softening’ visual effect and characters appear more 3D.

I’m with you, Kid. Autumn is more beautiful than Spring.

Spring celebrates a rebirth while Autumn is more about death. Of course we celebrate Spring.

Very insightful, Caulfield!

I’m having problems following Caulfields logic. Sunrise is usually contrasted with sunsets, Spring compared to Autumn.
That’s like me saying I get to work at 7:00 AM, and take my first break around mid March, early April.

Spring is spectacular around here. Fall is hit or miss and this year is a definite miss.
