The “crackling fire” videos are among the most popular on Youtube. I am among the people who put them on the bedroom TV to relax to while reading before sleep. I think humans must have some kind of genetic memory that makes a fireplace cosy and relaxing.
Fireplaces make a home. But I’ve learned that a wood burning stove is even better, for so many reasons. I’m sitting beside one right now on a rainy morning on the Oregon Coast.
When we had a fireplace, in the wintertime our Siamese would stretch out about two inches from the fire, belly toward the flame, and fall fast asleep. I’d carry her off, fearing she would catch fire! Of course, all warmed up like that, she was really great to cuddle with. :-)
In my youth, we would get two dump-truck loads of seasoned split hardwood dumped at the side of the road every fall. My job was to move it one wheelbarrow load at a time and stack it in the wood shed by the back door. (It built character!) At least it was delivered already split. Now I’d be happy with a gas inset fireplace.

That’s nice, but nothing beats Phoebe laying next to Marigold.

I’ve learned from experience that maintaining a fireplace can be a lot of work if you want to enjoy it . . .

Happiness is a warm tiger belly – as long as you are not IN it.

A fire can be cozy, as long as it’s in a fireplace.

I don’t know about tigers, but try lying down with your dog & putting your (surprisingly heavy) head on it & watch the fur fly…

Having travelled a bit, I’m not sure I’d want to snuggle to a nice warm tiger…

Well yeah, especially when the bear you married pulls you in close and you lay on his chest.
