I never understood the “free room & board” attitude. When I was in my late 20’s, I had to live at my folk’s house, while I was relocating and searching for a new place to live. Just as I did when I was a kid, I put my pay on the dining room table. I took what I needed for expenses and the rest went to the house.
My own daughter paid her fair share of the house expenses when she and my grandson lived with me in Florida.
Although one of my stepsons and his wife and kids are living with us rent free in the ground floor apartment, they do pay their share of the utilities and cable, and buy their own groceries.
This story arc annoyed me when it ran originally and after all these years, it annoys me still. I would kick that man (Zonker) out into the yard and slam the door.
I can have sympathy with one moving back home TEMPORATILY when they lose a job or due to financial circumstances. That is with the expectation that they’ll get back up on their own two feet. But as likeable as Zonker is, he’s nothing but a wastrel and needs to get kicked out and stand on his own two feet.

Back then, it was unusual for adult kids to return home. Now, due to changes in the job market and college debt, it’s become much more common…

No comment needed he is an adult kick him out. Love does not let leeches hang on your skin for a free lunch. Help the needy not the greedy.

Just turn off the Power, Water & Cable, empty the Refrigerator and check into a Motel for a few days.
That ought to get his attention.
