The TV’s when the grandparents were younger were console TV’s. They were a large piece of furniture on which many things could be displayed. I miss those old sets. The last one we had lasted 27 years even though some of the tubes would need replacing once in a while. That was never a problem since my own father owned a TV repair shop.

Both Momma and Gram had all sorts of different things that they put on top of the consoles depending on the season. Including the above village with the skaters on a mirror. Along with Santa, reindeer and a sleigh that sat on top of the piano.

There was a whole industry around making ceramic lamps to set on top of console TVs.

I still have a console TV in my family room. My current Plasma TV rests on top of it.
