And yet over sixty years later the US government still mints them. One indication of what’s wrong with the government.

Hasn’t he heard the phrase “find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck” or “a penny saved is a penny earned” or did he figure the germs that coin could be carrying would not be worth it?

On a regular morning walk, 3 or 4 years ago I found three quarters and two dimes on the sidewalk. Then four months later, 1350 miles away at our summer home, I found three quarters and two dimes in a ditch. This year I found three quarters and wondered where my two dimes were.

That penny would be worth ten cents today! Inflation: the hidden government tax!

When I was in Houston back in the Naughties, I walked a lot, and I was constantly finding dimes. Seldom any other coins. All I could figure was they were too small for most people to see, while also being more likely to fall through holes in pockets.

I once found a hundred dollar bill on the ground at a PGA Tour event. My mom made me ask everyone around if they’d dropped it. Catholic upbringing.

perspective – the angle of seeing the life we choose or don’t choose to see. Benny went to the barber to get a razor shave. The barber slipped and poor Benny died. The moral of the story is ‘if you are a Benny be careful at the barbershop as a Benny shaved could be a Benny urned’.

Was the penny face up or face down? I learned years ago that the old superstition about finding a penny and it bringing you good luck actually was only part of the full superstition. The way it’s facing determines whether it will bring good luck or bad. If it’s facing up, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck. If down, give it away and you and the person you give it to will have good luck. If you keep it when it’s facing down you’ll have bad luck.

Although I have to wonder if a coin collector didn’t come up with the full superstition. Date does appear on the obverse of a penny and I thought that date played a part in determining value of two coins of the same value when the obverse and reverse are identical on both. The Lincoln Memorial penny was minted from ‘59 to ’08, in that time the composition of the penny has changed three time and the weight twice. I have no idea what the change in value would be over that time (as far as I’m concerned a penny from 1959 is still one cent, but maybe to someone who collects them it’s actually worth more), but I’d think that a hundred years from now that difference would matter even more.

If a penny is so lucky, why did it get lost in the first place?

Pennies are useful. You can take them to Knotts and get one of those Charlie Brown and Snoopy souvenir coins made. But it has to be a shiny clean one. And you need two quarters on top. :-)
