And Good Ol’ Charlie Brown sums up the reason people continue following stupid traditions. As for me, my take when someone insists I follow along a tradition I don’t like is commenting, “Hey, it used to be traditional to sacrifice the first born; you’re the first born, right?” Oddly enough, nobody seems to be swayed by that argument. Oh, well. I’ll just keep on doing it that way. ;)

I used to live in a county that was a little, errrr, backward. I always thought they should’ve replaced the slogan on the county seal with the Latin phrase, “Semper Feci Sic” (loosely translated: “We’ve Always Done It That Way”).

Nothing wrong with house rules when you’re playing with your friends.

Probably the worst reason in all creation to do anything.

And not even true, because there wasn’t ‘always’ marbles.

In my youth, every family had a Monopoly set with some pieces missing—and one of the first things to go missing was always the rules sheet. Every family had added some rules of its own that were never in the official rules, and if you went to play at a friend’s house, you’d first have to go over all the variations you’d heard of and agree on which ones you were using.

“You stay in Jail forever unless you pay or throw doubles?”

“Penalties from Chance and Community Chest get piled in the center of the board and collected by the next person to land on Free Parking?”

“You collect double if you land on Go instead of just passing it?”
