what purpose do dogs serve aside from digging up the yard, chewing as well as slobbering on everything?

How does it shred your pants leg without shredding your leg? Sounds like precise claw trimming to get the length just right.

My cat has never shredded my clothes and always uses the litter box (very occasionally misses it). I do occasionally find a dead rat, bird, vole, or hairball on the living room floor. He’s a good cat but I wish he paid more attention when he goes number 2 and no more birds.

At first glance I thought the cat was “loving” Earls pantleg.

I saw or heard this somewhere: Dogs have owners; Cats have a staff.

My cat lives at my side, catches mice (even without claws), and provides companionship when no one else is around… so do the dogs that live outdoors (minus the mice; they tend to ignore them vs. squirrels and rabbits)… so they both have their purposes. Some people are not “animal” people of any kind, and that is OK too… :-)

I have had both cats and dogs sharing my life – often at the same time – and their personalities are always different.

Cats, by their very nature, have a different world view than dogs – except for one cat I had that thought he was a dog. That cat would even go for walks with the dogs and me. He didn’t like other cats but liked to hang with the big dogs. His personality was definitely more canine than cat.

Earl you are not cuddly, you can’t sit on her lap and purr while she pets you. Cats’ fur is soft and silky. How can you compete? You can’t, so forget about it.

Earl….Perhaps if you showed the cat more affection, fed it, brushed it, you wouldn’t get surprises in your slippers or shredded pants legs…it’s just showing you that it feels your negative opinion of it…if you can’t get affection from Opal, try the cat!

One day, getting home from work, I come out of the garage and see a neighborhood cat sunning itself on a 2nd-floor, back-porch railing, surveying its turf. I waved and said “Hi, cat!” The cat said “Meow!” back. I was proud my existence had actually been acknowledged… ☺

Earl, we guys exist for two purposes: opening jars, and making sperm. Other than that, we’re useless excrescences cluttering up the earth. Deal with it.

And why would Earl just sit there letting the cat claw his pant leg to bits, or Opal for that matter?
