My Uncle had a lot of first edition comics, read them once and stored them in box and left them at home.40 years later he asked his mother about them, my Grandmother, hoping for a big windfall. “Well” she said, “there were some cold winters back in the sixties and we burnt everything in the house”. Then a few years later my Uncle came back for old gilded picture frames, there were a lot of paintings in the house. They were now worth a lot, my Grandmother… “Well it was cold in the ….”
The only thing worth money is Money,,,Any one remember the "Cabbage Patch Dolls’ and the potbellied old hags who fought over them? at the "Toys"r Us" ?….
’Tis a story heard far too often, and true in my case. My Mom decided it was time to clean house, or for me to grow up, or whatever, and at one fell swoop she junked (gave away? I never knew for sure) all my comic books, which had been acquired over a span of years….

First edition is fine but they also do by grading as well (see https://www.sellmycomicbooks.com/comic-book-grading.html)

I’m pretty sure an erudite, well-spoken buzzard such as Gaylord would not say “off of”. More likely “retire on” or “retire off”.
