It’s easy, Heart. Just don’t feed the turtle pizza.

Just be sure to wash your hands thoroughly if you handle it or clean anything in it’s terrarium.

Turtles are much more difficult than any mammal. They require specific lighting and foods or the shell doesn’t grow properly. Ailments are more difficult to recognize and treat. They can’t cry to get attention when they’re hungry. Add in that they normally live 10-15 years at a minimum, and can get large depending on the species…this is a terrible first pet. Not a fan of giving someone ANY pet, but especially not a fan of giving someone an animal they did not want.

Should’ve went with a guinea pig. They’re practically named for testing. And they’re easier to take care of than a turtle.

A kitten would be a good first pet. It washes itself, meows when hungry, can be affectionate, and pretty much looks out for itself when it grows. Only thing left to do is scoop the litter, feed and water it, and show it affection when it allows you to. I got my first pet (a kitten) when I was 9 years old. We got my son 2 cats when he was 5 years old but of course, his dad and I did most of the litter-scooping-feeding-watering until he was older. Now son feeds the cats and cleans up after them when they vomit hairballs.

My worst fear has been realized, Heart’s mom didn’t bother doing any research before buying a “Practice Pet” with an average lifespan of 20 years (i’m assuming it’s a red slider).

If Mark hadn’t jumped the gang to 6th grade, he could’ve woven this storyline in with Heart having Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing as a reading assignment.

This may be biting more than Heart can chew. And if so, then tonight she dines on turtle soup.
