The Man certainly is fully covered. And the story could not be covered any better, with three Ace reporters on the scene. But where is their apprentice?
Georgia posted on her Twitter account that she is going to be a part of Middle Grade Magic which is a virtual summit focusing on middle grade readers. Not sure if anyone here would be interested, but it is free. It also says the content will be available afterwards for those who can’t attend live. This is vitally important breaking news. Good report, guys! Look at Lupin’s eager little lean, waiting for the camera to move off him! Look at those comfy sprawls! Let’s hope the Man doesn’t need to get up anytime soon – although firstly, too bad for him if he does, and secondly, if he’s like some gamers I know, he’s not going anywhere for a good long time. What a perfect way to spend a Saturday!
Since cats are almost completely covered in fur (except for those poor sphinx cats, who should never have been bred) one would think that they can only feel fuzzy textures through their paws. And yet they love to lie on fuzzy things.
Our kitties love warm blankets, but they ADORE fleece blankets. Tired of fighting them for possession of their fleecy warmth. This winter we decided to get them their own, we still have to share but they get the idea. Out of the 3 we bought for them, one they fight over the most because it seems extra fluffy and has a giant orange kitten on it. Is it the kitten print or the extra fleecy-ness? We don’t know.
Oh good; I’m glad to see the boys all peacefully coexisting today. I don’t like it when pets squabble.
Off-topic, Akiro should come home from the vet today after spending the night there. I hope having his plumbing flushed will alleviate his current problems so he can go back to his stroppy self.
Update on the Cinnamon/Layla “conflict”. Thank you, I avidly read all suggestions. a little while ago Cinnamon jumped up on the bed where Layla was lying – on the sheets that I was going to change today, anyhow – and they are now lying about 18" apart, apparently ignoring each other. Cinnamon meowed at Layla, though I don’t think she said anything insulting. I thought cats only meowed at their humans and spoke with each other through the little grunts, trills and “thruuups”. Just a minute ago, however, Cinnamon meowed again and added a short hiss. I told her “no”, which she clearly understood. I hope it’s OK to leave them like this, so I can go to the store and get eggs and the morning paper. I don’t want a lot of drama!
I sort of envy the Man: Because he works in the video game industry, spending a day playing video games isn’t the waste of time it would be for me. Fortunately, my computer is not very good for the type of games that interest me. Also, most military strategy/tactics games are either not realistic in terms of actual battle, have way too much eye candy, or both. So I get more writing done (which I love doing) but a break now and then would be nice.
A brief progress report, but a big bit of progress.
She purrs.
Trixie is a real hard case. Before she decided to leave the bathroom sanctuary it was (relatively) to grab her for brushing, foot cleaning, rubbies, etc. Once she realized that the castle was now her domain, direct physical contact has been almost non-existent.
She has settled on a few favorite spots. She has mostly stopped fleeing the room when we enter, but she keeps a close eye on us. She tolerates the other cats. And of course she has no problem seeking out the giant humans at meal time and making her impatience known.
We have welcomed the occasional hairball because it means she is finally grooming, but she is still rather scruffy. Yesterday I noticed she was shaking off a rear paw. I worried that she had fallen back to her litter foot problem.
So, the great kitty chase began. Lisa and I followed (stalked) through the castle. Upstairs, behind the suit of armor, WHOOSH, break past me and the giant woman, into the kitchen through the dining room under the throne in the living room WHOOSH, back up the stairs into the office area under the desk and WOOSH, down the cat tree into the living room. Pant pant pant pant. Me, not the cat.
AH HAH! She went into the bathroom. Trapped.
So I snagged her, we towel wrapped her, only to find that her rear paws were clean. Friggin awesome. She has been grooming. Since we have her, let’s clip her front claws. Easy peazie.
Please note that Trixie no longer is the feral beast we trapped 4 months ago. Once captured she “tolerates” a substantial amount of handling without biting or clawing. Much better than the old days. But she is still very much averse to being touched, cannot be held at all unless wrapped in a towel.
Anyway, since we had her in our grasp I decided it was bath time. No, I’m not suicidal. Not a sink bath.
First I use the Fur-minator cat comb to get out the major undercoat shed. Then we get a washcloth totally soggy. I keep a hand on her so she won’t run and I squeeze out the warm water on her while sort of rubbing it into her fur.
This is taking place on a waterproof surface. Repeat until the cat is soggy. I use the washcloth to stroke, rub the water in, etc. Follow with a soft brush to really get all the fur and undercoat wet down to the skin. Then follow again with the Fur-minator.
Once you get the rhythm going she actually leans into it. It has to feel good to get all the excess hair out, and no matter how feral they are, no cat likes being dirty or matted. So, brush and comb until almost dry. Presto. Smooth, silky, clean, looks like a cat again.
But none of that is the important part. Once completed the gentle words continue and the gentle petting and rubbies just because we can and because she needs the human contact to continue acclimating.
I am rather heavily scratching the neck/back just below the head when Lisa asks me if I can hear it. Hear what? I still have the dregs of the flu and my ears and sinuses are stuffy. I cock my head and listen.
She is quietly purring. Not the little rare single buzz we’ve heard in the past. She is a muffled motorboat. rumblerumblerumblerumblerumblerumblerumble. And one front paw is curling. I almost began to cry. Makes me snuffly just writing about it. Trixie has her lids half closed. She is purring and lounging and enjoying being touched by a giant human.
This goes on for several minutes. Varied petting and scratching and brushing and she is still purring. We give it a rest, she sits for a moment then moves away to get some space. She is still not a people cat. But she settles down a few feet away and continues purring. And purring and purring. Very quietly.
We have fluffy Polarfleece sheets on our split king bed and a fluffy sapphire-colored blanket on top, perfect for cold nights. All three cats love them! They all knead the blanket and Achilles kneads the sheets so quickly as if it’s his hope of salvation. Honor still growls at Achilles, him still being the kitten interloper (though he’s almost out of kitten stage), but doesn’t growl as much due to her being too comfortable to work up a good grump. Nimitz finds a fluffy spot between us, nudges us to pet him, and purrs his face off. We love them as well, staying in bed to read when it’s cold instead of adjusting the thermostat. Admittedly, it’s nice to read with cats.

What a cozy scene. So glad there are no grudges being held about food issues. Fuzzy robes are very healing. Is that a white t-shirt puck is wearing?

Fluffiness is important to cats. It’s an important part of cat flattery. E. g., “You look really fluffy today.”
