Of all the things that Trump has done and will do, the lies are the worst. They do more to erode truth and divide the country than anything he will ever do because we will never know that if the day ever comes and he tells the truth, will we believe him?
It’s like the logic puzzle where you want to know whether the road leads to the village and you meet someone who either tells the truth all the time or lies all the time. You ask him, “If I were to ask you whether this road leads to the village, would you answer yes?”
On September 19, 1926, H. L. Mencken wrote: “No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.” That last sentence explains the stunning horror of the 2016 election and the premonition one gets when considering the possibilities in the 2020 election.
When I was in my early twenties I was present for a magazine interview given by my employer, a prominent naval architect, on problems facing the industry. He was asked what the biggest problem facing the industry might be. His reply stunned everyone in the room to silence. He said that the biggest problem facing industry and the nation was the casual use of the lie. That the casual misrepresentation of facts commonly used in advertising were now seeping with alarming frequency into the forum of public debate AND BEING ACCEPTED AS A TOOL OF POLITICS (emphasis mine) and would eventually cause lasting damage to democracy. That was 1972, Nixon was president, and his two top advisers had been recruited from Madison Ave. advertising firms.
Wow, like the old play ground days. No need for facts just say anything you want and let other people sort it out. You will either be loved or hated. I liked the old say ‘yes’ if you mean ‘no’ game. It can go on for hours.
Captain Kirk to the robot/cyborg thing: “Everything I say is a lie. Was I telling the truth when I said that?” (Robots head explodes, or melts, or something.)
Liars know what the truth is and are just lying about it. Bulls#i##3rs don’t know or care what the truth is. They couldn’t tell you the truth even if your threatened them with bodily harm. Trump is unable to lie effectively because he is too lazy to find out what the facts are ( which is also why he can’t have any policy detail.) So, consequently, Trump is not a liar so much as a BSer.
All this arguing about this is just hyperboly in many ways.
One thing that I believe I can say that both Democrats and Republicans can (hopefully) agree upon is that our current president is utterly unlike any previous president in demeanor and in congeniality. I suspect that both sides either in public or in their private thoughts hope that we are able to have a new leader elected in 2020 that will better represent our nation, our whole citizenry, and will help guide us into a better, safer, and calmer future.
Iran/Contra- Reagan had a lie. Bush/Cheney- the Saddam lie. Bush senior-Noreiga lie as Meese set him up in the drug business. Trump, thousands of lies, and while the others destroyed other countries and governments, Bonespurs is destroying THIS country.
Time for impeachment for obstruction of justice, emolument clause issues, business conflict of interests, fraud, etc. Time for our gaslit nation to renew itself once again.
When the Dear Leader was on the road to Damascus, NJ, one day when he was a young man, he met an angel with a flaming sword who said, “Thou shalt become the most prolific and least believable liar known to man. Thy prevarication shall become the stuff of legend. I use the second person singular in addressing thee because thou dost not warrant the respect conferred by the plural.”

“If I decide to run for office, I’ll produce my tax returns, absolutely. And I would love to do that.” – Trump
And now he’s ready to go to court so he doesn’t have to do something he claimed he would LOVE to do.

10,000th lie? Probably took about 10 minutes after swearing in (the first set of lies).
