Looking at how giant that laundry room appears in Panel 1, I think I agree with John. That room is huge it could probably hold a train set, a washer, a dryer, and maybe add a full-size freezer to boot.
Unquoting howtheduck the laundry room is larger than the standard size. My laundry definitely won’t be able to accompany a model train set – unless it is set up along the walls where they meet the ceiling. My laundry room might be able to accompany a catwalk up there where the track could be laid down on the catwalk and trains secured to prevent them from falling off – walls vibrate when doors slam and the room has two doors – the door to the garage and another to the kitchen. Nah. I much rather he makes room in the garage by moving his goddamn jeep out of the garage.
There was so much to learn and to build. With artistry and serious focus, my husband built one of the most intricate and beautiful models in Ontario. He connected with other like-minded men, and soon, our circle of friends included Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas: two of the “9 Old Men” —the original animators at the Disney Studios in Los Angeles. Ollie’s ride-on trains added to Walt Disney’s fascination with model railways. After he had filled his own back yard, his wife suggested he find a piece of land where he could really enjoy his hobby…and Disneyland, the theme park, was born!
I, for one, am happy to see John so excited and enjoying his new hobby. Like most of us (both genders included), he sometimes can be unintentionally thoughtless of others, but two little things called “communication” and “compromise” solve most problems.
Very newbie thinking in the hobby, most of the miniature railroaders I know wouldn’t want their layout messed with in the way John suggests, and a laundry room really isn’t ideal just because of moisture, vibrations from the machines, etc. Every time that board has to come up and down too will knock bits loose and off as well and stuff will be damaged and/or lost. Not my first choice for a set up like that. Having said that…cartoon logic ;) .
I wouldn’t remove the cars and buildings. I would just haul the whole thing up, and then leave it up after I finished my laundry. It’s a laundry room, not a train station.

But, John, does El have space in the laundry room after constantly removing the cars and buildings and pulling on the rope?

Uh, didn’t someone note that Lynn was divorced from her husband? Was this the beginning of the marital problems?

“All the space I’ll need.” ROTFL! There is no such thing.

Oh no it won’t be the least bit inconvenient for you John! It’ll only be inconvenient for her, and she doesn’t matter! Only you matter.

I am thinking he has a solid plan. I mean really. How often is he going to be playing with the trains when she wants to do laundry?

This is when she says “then, you do all the laundry.”

Since I had to carve out a small space for my washer and dryer, if this happened to me the trains would definitly go!

Put the pulleys on the ceiling and hoist the whole thing straight up. They make kits for doing this.

This is the opposite of the toilet seat—when you’re done playing, John, leave the board up.

Since the train folds against the wall, maybe one day when John is at work, the train should “magically” relocate somewhere else in the house :-)
