He’s a runner (for one), so he must be getting that “runner’s high”. I tried that once, but I must have gotten some bad sh1t, cuz I just wound up puking.
I guess there is some truth to this. No matter how hard I worked, I’d never have been able to dunk, hit a serve properly, or break 100 on a golf course, but I can ride a bike 100 miles.
For me, this was really nicely stated by Frazz and was not condescending in any fashion that I can discern. What I take away is:
1. Frazz lacks the talent to do things others can’t (so he is saying he does not have any special talent to allow him to excel even with hard work at a more glamorous sport).
2. Frazz then says he is at least very persistant because he forces himself to do things other people usually will not do (like run a marathon).
3. In the concluding panel Frazz then says in response to the question from (wonderful) Principal Spaetzel "Very few people run marathons, far fewer than than the large number of folks who can easily “out-dunk” him".
Frazz is not really saying if he runs marathons “well” or not… just that he perseveres enough to finish them.
And there you have it, my friends: The closest I can come to explaining my taste in sports and personal challenges, along with yet another confession that I lack significant talent, but with the bonus of the relatively painful admission that I do, still, in fact have quite the ego.
Also, that the sports I do are just plain, if inexplicably, fun. When stuff doesn’t go wrong, anyway, and when they do go wrong, that’s just part of the package. When things go right, it’s splendid, and when things go less right, it’s a story, and one that gets back to doing things other people won’t.

Huh? When you lack the talent to do things other people can’t, that makes you just one of them.

Notice he does not say a small percentage of the people actually do or have dunked on him.

Where he works, there’s only one other person who could possibly dunk on him.
Well, maybe Miss Plainwell too.

Don’t have a nightcap before reading Frazz. I had to read his comment in the middle at least three times before it made sense.

It’s a matter of finding what you’re good at, and what you enjoy doing.

Lots of people run marathons. To avoid the crowds you need to do ultramarathons

I thought he was a songwriter. So he does have the talent to do things other people can’t.
I pet cats. A much pleasanter sport.

Lots of others can dunk but won’t do endurance sports, but he can’t dunk, so he does endurance sports to compensate.

Is “dunk” referring to basketball or donuts?

So who exactly is being displaced by immigrants who come here looking for work, Americans who can’t do it or Americans who won’t do it?

From what I’ve heard about the condition that football players are in after a game, I think that one too should count as a suffering sport.
