Seriously? We’re supposed to believe that a grade-school teacher would assign multiple books to be read over a 3-day weekend? (“But I’ll go easy on you little tykes, you only have to read the war half of War and Peace.”) Sometimes this strip just strains too hard for whatever joke it’s trying to achieve.
http://www.gocomics.com/frazz/2019/05/26If holiday weekend as test drive for summer vacation is a great way to look at it, it’s even better to look at re-reading a good book as test driving an old beater. A new car is fun to drive, no question. I’ve done it. I’ve owned a few. But to paraphrase the great automotive critic Brian May, who actually is not an automotive critic nor was he writing about cars, their beauty and their style wear kind of smooth after a while. They’re very predictable, reliable. But I’ve owned even more old beaters, and let me assure you, if you drive the right heap, every day holds the potential for something new. So it is with books. They, too, offer the potential for something new every time. Indeed, there are a number of books where I got so much out of the second (or more) reading that they might even have been better than brand new. But the comparison only goes so far. While books might get you lost, they’ll rarely leave you stranded.

If the assignments are easier, why complain?

Can’t tell if he is complaining about the assignment or about having nothing to do for the holiday because he’s way ahead of the list.

Oo oo, I’m going to do something unprecedented. I’m going to think something uncharitable, realize it isn’t worth saying, and keep it to myself.BOOM!

I guess I’m kinda dim. What are beaters? I guess I’m just too old.

A beater is an old, beat-up car (but still driveable).
