“A consumer, a spiritualist, and a realist.” When they are out in the middle of nowhere, I am not sure those titles will apply any longer to Luann, Dez and Bernice.
Bernice will find herself too busy to study others. She’ll be battling bugs, going potty without a commode, trying to cook meals by fire… and handling Luann freaking out about everything…no clean clothes, yucky food that does not taste right…no commode – are there animals down there?? (I was always afraid of snakes slithering out of the outhouse toilet)…sleeping on the ground – where the bugs, snakes, and scorpions are….
They’ll be out in the woods, lost from the trail because their phones have no signal, no food because they did not bring a bear canister, then on Saturday the earthquake will start an avalanche immediately above them, and THEN… come Monday…
Lu will be in chem class talking with Tara about some trouble with Puddles.
This could be funny for about a week. Hopefully tomorrow they are already in the wild – encountering their first obstacle. Luann’s ugly shirt is OK for camping.
I just watched a fantastic movie, about an hour long, “Miracle on Everest.” I highly recommend it. It’s about a 2008 climb of Everest. Something similar happened on the infamous 2006 climb of Everest.
Um, doesn’t Luann have a couple of jobs? She can’t just run off for the summer. How are her parents going to feel about her ditching her job at the Fuse? What’s she using for money to buy her camping stuff?
Dez is happy because misery loves company. My communing with nature is gardening and then sitting in my gazebo with a fan and a drink admiring the flowers.
I’m pretty surprised that Bernice will go with them. During the difficulties Luann always knows how to react and face the practical problems, Bernice just panicked or insists on her ideas, even if they are really wrong. For me the Spiritualist and the Consumer will end up having to calm the Realist in crisis. It will be fun see Bernice lose her annoying sense of superiority and freak out.
So they aren’t going to go to campsite, but actually pick a random spot in the middle of nowhere? I may be with Bernice: that’s really not smart.
When we used to go camping, we roughed it more than most: we had mountain tents, not trailers. But we also had access to a bathroom.
But once I did go with a friend and we just picked a random spot in the middle of nowhere. In the woods. We didn’t make it through the night. We weren’t ready to be unable to see anything at all while wolves were howling. We also had a very hard time leaving, since we had to walk through the woods in absolute pitch darkness and weren’t entirely sure we were going the right way. That was one scary half hour.
The Mrs and our daughters think that roughing it means waiting 30 minutes for room service. And yet they were all in favour of emigrating to Vancouver Island last year.
The Angel of the South noted that “Luann looks even more shallow than pre-fall Tiffany.”
She does, doesn’t she? And with Tiff getting a job she looks a bit more like Luann. Maybe they’re starting to rub off on one another. After all, they both still have an interest in Gunther and his new digs. More or less.
Camping with those three should be an interesting adventure, to say-the-least.
Dez seems the most “capable” of camping.
Bernice seems the more easily adaptable to organizing herself to a regimental form of camping.
Luann seems capable of camping, but if the story arcs remain true-to-form, she will most likely have the lion’s share of surprises, challenges, and conundrums with the endeavor… and hence the punchlines… for good or bad.
* * *
Now, the other question that comes to mind…. will this camping be just those three…. or will there be others added into the mix? If others are added…. will it be more girls, some guys, or both? For me, I would think it would be interesting to add into the mix:
1. Tiffany (but not likely to happen)
2. Tara (moderately likely to be asked, but I think she would choose to not go)
3. Jack (high probability he would go, it seems)
4. Nil (seems unlikely, as it seems like he is being relegated to an ever more minor character)
5. Pru (seems unlikely as she is older and in a bit different life stage)
People I would rather NOT see go camping include:
1. Gunther (no need to further denegrate him with the likely story arcs of him having various camping “difficulties”)
2. Les (just…. no…. I need a longer rest from him)
I’m gonna just go ahead and place my bet now: for all their talk and planning, we won’t actually get to see them out in the woods (or on the off chance that we do, it won’t even be for a full week of strips). Anyone want to take this bet?
My wife and I used to love to go backpacking and camping. One of our favorite places was “Desolation Valley” which is very close to Lake Tahoe. We would start at the trail head at Echo Chalet, and backpack (mine was about 65 lbs., and hers was about 40 to 45 lbs.) up to the 9,500 foot level. We would go around the east side of Echo Lake (lower and upper), by a small lake, then camp somewhere between Lake Tamarack and Lake Ralston. Those alpine lakes were so clear, you could see the bottom pretty well all the way from one side to the other. Most times, we would be in there 4 days or so, and never see another person. Eventually, I bought an aluminum canoe, and we would paddle across Echo Lake, then carry the canoe and our packs up to the higher lakes. Absolutely beautiful and unspoiled up there.
.
“Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, and kill nothing but time”
I’m having trouble warming up to this arc. Hope it gets better. I do like seeing Luann taking a leading role in the story and I can imagine these three trying to rough it.
