Hot sun, dry desert, blistering volcanoes…..and he seeks warmth on a skin-blistering shell? That’s one bird that’s still as cold-blooded as the reptiles he evolved from.

The turtle’s looking half-baked.

So the bird is getting warm, the turtle is getting shade and all is good with the world.

Now you smell Apteryx. Though unlike the tortoise there, the bird has internal heating like humans do.
