“Nature’s car alarm” is a gorgeous – if tongue-in-cheek – description.
I’m not sure what to say about Tommy’s flamingo feety pajamas, except maybe “Look at the flamingo feety pajamas!” What kind of pajamas do you think your cats would wear? Diesel would wear something comfortable and easy to get up and dash to the kitchen in, yet good for snuggling – maybe much-battered sports wear? Raven deserves something as sleek and silky as he is, plus a robe with pockets, because pajamas don’t have to match.
I can testify that they are deafening. I was driving home from town the other evening. I play my music rather loud in my truck, and I could hear the peep toads OVER my stereo, with my windows CLOSED!!
I’ll take your word for it that they set each other off, because we don’t have them out here in the desert. Now, coyotes, on the other hand, are definitely up for a chain reaction. And when I used to go out in the country at night for astronomy class, if they weren’t already singing, I’d start ’em off.
I live on a peninsula jutting into Percy Priest Lake in Nashville. Now that spring/summer is in full swing, peep toads, tree frogs, and bullfrogs make a wonderful evening chorus, with occasional solos from a whip-or-will.
Years ago there was a creek near my father in law’s house. There were treefrogs too. Then it got covered in concrete (domed) by the county for mosquito abatement. Sad, no more frogs.
Down in the Gulf South, we have tree frogs. After every warm weather rain you would here them calling out for hours looking for a girl friend for the night.
I admire Lupin’s enthusiasm…he can’t really participate in this story (although that may be a blessing in this case), but he’s all in! A true Cat of Adventure, even if it’s vicarious!
Where we lived in a location with many trees with a small spring fed creek at the bottom of a valley in Overland Park KS, we could hear an amazing sound in early evening that would be perfect for a SF movie sound track. Very weird! Then later in the Summer we had tiny [nearly unseen] tree frogs adding to a night symphony of cricket backgroundrhythm section. One night I aimed a powerful flashlight into an oak tree I finally share a tree frog WOW!
Not sure if they are the same type of frogs, since I am still new to this county, but I have a pond to my north, a creek to my south, that turns and goes right through my property to the pond, and a goldfish pond that is giving safe sanctuary to at least one frog. I hear frog peeping and crickets from all sides. After too many years of city life, thank Cat for being in the country! I love listening to the frogs.

This must be near Battey Meetinghouse Road and Peep Toad Road which are “Scituate”-ed in RI, although it could be in Mass:

If peep toads are like car alarms, I’m glad we don’t have them here. And it would explain why Elvis’ tail is twitching.

“Their beauty is deafening.” Worthy of inclusion in best quotes, or too obscure without context?

When I first saw the phrase “peep toads,” I thought it was a little candy marshmallow in the shape of a toad.

I had to Google “peep toads.” Found this interesting video about them (AKA Spring Peeper frogs) by a naturalist in CT:

I remember seeing TINY frogs at a local pond when I was a kid, but don’t remember hearing them. May have been too late in the year.
