Hang on, now, hang on… The Lucranian Salvage Vessel interface told Wally that “Dittos” (again, not from Earth – Sept 12, 2016) would turn feral without a powerful controller. And with Wally knocked out…maybe his dittos have turned feral, manifesting the trio’s greatest fear, so that it can feed on their emotional energy…?
Well, that head emerging from the dittos is definitely Jim’s. But it is not saying anything, so it is purely ditto mimicry. So not Jim, but still unpleasant. I think Revollo has the correct interpretation. Wally losing it, looses the dittos to be feral. And when first encountered, they loved to show themselves as teethy monsters, so Jim’s image is right up their alley.
Well it looks like an echo of Jim’s Schism is playing through the dittos or something. Either way… yeah, this isn’t good. But when has going so crazy that reality’s already frangible fabric gets tugged on even harder than usual?
Then again, what if they never actually escaped from the Fitzgerald, and the ship is feeding off of their emotional energy? Pretty sure that losing Holly would have been a great start to the feeding.
Can the dittos physically affect humans? I know they can get clothes clean and they made a bridge and a carriage type thing when Wally and co. were crossing the country. But Jim was Jim when he had his meltdown in Unity, not a bunch of animated dittos. Could they actually attack or hurt living things?
I don’t think this is a sub/unconscious manifistation. And I don’t think it’s just dittos.
I believe that whatever happened to Wally, mentally, caused the dittos to flip out and Jim/I/God/One/whatever is using that as a portal. Yes, I think similar to when Jim’s Schism happened on 11/3/14 (Jeez that now seems like a long time ago). At that time, I/whatever possessed Jim internally.
This time, it seems like he’s found a way to cross over, using Wally. Wally doesn’t have the Schism, but he has something better: dittos.
At the heart of the matter is the true nature of this world, the true nature of the dittos, and how they are related. I think that if this world like the Matrix, then dittos are like the code, or at the very least that silver stuff Neo got covered in when he was first taken out.
I don’t know if we’ll ever truly know what is going on in the world of Endtown, but this much is clear [to me]: Whatever I/God/One is, it comes from outside, and is using Wally’s dittos as a door….and Jim’s face probably just to spite Wally.
Perhaps it fears Wally, and knows Wally is getting a little too close to the truth. Marx seems to be tutoring Wally in his dreams, trying to lead him to the truth rather than showing him (4/18/12).
I still believe that Endtown exists as a lower-dimensional playground for Neathery. To that end, Marx may represent his own persona inserted into the world whenever he wants to directly interact with his creations. Whereas I/whatever may very well represent his sadistic side that has put his creations through hell.
And to that end, I believe Eden is in for a LOT of pain now.
I predict that Kirbee’s going to take charge of the situation. She’s shown to have plenty of grit and determination in emergencies even if she’s not a genius.
A few thoughts and ideas of what’s going on currently on the comic.
If Wally’s in some kind of coma/fugue (as I suppose he is) then what caused him to slip into it? Was what Ravenscroft showed him and the fact that he has four finger-claws (as opposed to five) really that traumatic?
My feeling is that things are getting rather scary right now because Wally’s seen a lot of pain and evil in his travels and from within “Endtown”. His conscious self has kept that evil tightly under wraps but since he’s slipped into that fugue state, the “demons” have been let loose and are now manifesting themselves in the form of the dittos he controls.
This entry is really sticking in my head, moreso than any other really. If Endtown were adapted, this would be the “Oh $#!%” point.
I can hear the sound of the portal in my head: bass-heavy static electricity, and wind-like whispering or moaning as the dittos are forced into doing something awful. I can hear the sound of I coming through: a ripping and rending like flesh and bone being torn apart. I itself is yet silent, soon to howl as Jim did, for now inhaling deep and gurgly, filled with spit and gore. It moves jerkily, haltingly, like something out of Silent Hill or Resident Evil.
And no matter which of the above theories on what exactly is coming out of the dittos turn out to be true (I still believe it’s a portal, not a manifestation), I think this is one of the landmark strips of the series. Like we can categorize Endtown before this, and Endtown after this.

It…resembles Jim…but Jim died four years ago, in the May 15-20, 2015 strips…so I’m stumped!
I LOVE this strip! Endtown sure keeps you guessing!
If it IS Jim, I hope he doesn’t burn down this colony, like he did Unity.

A “Jim”……chupacabra manifestation. :-O

I think that Wally’s not merely unconscious, but in some kind of fugue or coma state.

It would appear that upper management really did have a good reason to fear ditto usage.

I want to ad a word balloon to that second panel that says “Heeeere’s Johnny!!”

I think there’s a new word: “Kirbeeism”. An endearingly plain-thinking response to a serious and complex situation.

Another possibility is that this is a manifestation of Wally’s subconscious.

I don’t think that Wally is awake, that he really woke up after Candy Land. Then again, when have I ever been right trying to second guess Aaron?

Has Jim been riding around in Wally’s mind all this time or is a manifestation Wally’s schism syndrome; either way it’s coming thru the Dittos
