    During the middle ages, it was common for large households to keep a pot of soup perpetually cooking on the fire. This allowed servants to grab a quick meal without bothering the cook. New ingredients were added whenever they were available. The soup never spoiled because it was always at or near boiling temperature. I’m not saying it was great soup, but it wasn’t dangerous to eat.

    Technically, it’s “pease porridge,” a porridge made with pease. “Pease” was heard as plural, so the singular “pea” was back-formed from it. Similarly with “cherise” > “cherry.”
