Interesting thought given in the Book of Enoch (not part of our standard Bible but has some interesting ideas) is that the adult animals brought their babies to Noah for inclusion in the Ark. This makes a lot of sense. Babies would not take up a lot of room so you could get more diversified kinds of animals on board to be saved. Also, they would not be procreating while on board as they would be too young.

Very similar to the reverse of something an acquaintance actually did. He built a (big) boat in his basement, over the course of several years.
