I spent some time with a metal detector and a trowel one summer – I found a LOT of bottle caps, and I think one single penny. Ya gotta love the sport for itself, because it sure ain’t for the treasure!
Kids LOVE to find pirate treasure during pretend. A gadget added for a young geek just sweetens the experience. Although it might not be that great for the kid’s posture and back.
My son was in summer school, and we always got there late to pick him up. He went down to the field where people rode dune buggies and dirt bikes to scavenge. Eyes alone he found a gold Hawaiian bracelet and a silver one. Sold it and he kept the cash. SCORE!

Loose change abounds in the sandbox, like at the beach.

Kids should be exposed to new knowledge as soon as they’re ready for it. Otherwise they get bored and stop paying attention altogether.

Leave him alone. Last week he found someone’s dental retainer that cost $600.

Wait until he finds enough “Treasure” to pay for the Metal Detector, though.

Best to find the jacks before they rise to the surface and someone gets hurt…

The problem with sandboxes is… wait. The problems are:
Cats
Sandy pants. And sox. And underwear. And hair. And mouth.
Kids that should still be in diapers. (see “Cats” above)
Broken glass (I kid you not).
