If the universe is inclusive of everything there is, how can there be more than one of it?
Having said that – husband and I are starting to believe in rifts in the time line due to something changing things in the past. There are things that we both know – separately and so definitely that are not what they were. Just one example and it is a silly thing – in the movie “Touch of Class” which we have seen numerous times in theaters, on TV and on Beta & VHS tape has a scene in which Glenda Jackson goes to neighbors to borrow some oregano. She pronounces it each time as “or E gone oh” as opposed to “ore egg an oh” as we would. It was this way in the movie theater, it was this way on the Beta and DVD tapes, it was this way on TV – we both found the difference to be interesting and even started calling the herb same between each other. One day a couple of years ago we watched it on TV and suddenly she was giving the same pronunciation as we would with a weird insert sort of sound around it. We figured it had been changed. We took our tapes and it was the same there. How could it have changed from what we both KNOW we heard in all versions and continued to repeat to ourselves over the years – rift in the timeline – or if there are other universes – we are in a different one.
I’m looking hard at the space between them to see if there’s any distortion where the two universes come together. And I almost missed the table turning white!
It’s been said that Jimmy colors his own strips. So the shift to Janis’ view of the universe in panel 4 must be deliberate and part of the gag. “The gag” being men and women live in two different universes.
P.S. The “multiple parallel universe” idea is more an artifact of the mathematics used in trying to predict how the cosmos operates. Perhaps a different “math” would “predict” something different. Much ado about very little.
What about the strip? I don’t understand the gag. What’s the punchline? The fact that the tablecloth is different colors? Is that the parallel universe?
I think there is confusion between “universe” and “reality.” As a skeptical solipsist I suspect but am not certain we do not live in an objective reality. I came to terms with that 40 years ago, knowing that the scientific approach I took to troubleshooting was probably just to appease my illusion. I understand that most nights – probably every one – I create an alternate reality that can not be distinguished from this one by any reliable test, but that does not mean that this reality of the moment has to be as insubstantial as the one I so recently left. Then I think about reconciling quantum physics with relativistic physics and the doubt returns.
I love the discussion (and have had the same type of experience of things changing). But I’d just like to point out that the tablecloth color changes in the last panel to show us that the conversation between Arlo and Janis is going on in more than one universe. Love that!
No mention yet of multiverse theory for “branes” in the overall cosmological “bulk”. Maybe they are drifting back and forth between adjacent branes. Though, in my layman’s understanding, not sure how branes are substantially different than bubble universes…
Albert Einstein: “Once you can accept the universe as being something expanding into an infinite nothing which is actually something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy.” “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
I hate to think that in an alternative universe husband and I did not get together, but like the idea that we might have children in alternative universe.

In their parallel universe, the table is different color.

At the very least, one can pull out what is now a standard observation: “Men Are from Mars; Women Are from Venus.”
(No, I’ve never read that book and never will. I’m a guy. We don’t read books like that. All I know is the title.)

It looks like their marriage is no different in the parallel universe. Arlo is still Arlo.

Is the table intentionally colored white or was it just an error? JJ’s first strip back from vacation.

The chair changed color in panel 2 and Janis’ bra size was reduced in 3 and 4.

No wonder we are so tired all the time. It’s exhausting working in all those different universes

Maybe it was the other Arlo from the other universe with whom she has been conversing.

I believe you. If it was a one time hearing of the word by one of you, it could easily have been a misleading, but repeated incidents rule that out.

Never mind that: What happened to the table? (Or maybe the 4th panel is from a different universe.)
