After completing 14 home-study Army Extension Courses, Reagan enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Officers’ Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937.
On April 18, 1942, Reagan was ordered to active duty for the first time. Due to his poor eyesight, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office.36 Upon the approval of the Army Air Forces (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the First Motion Picture Unit (officially, the “18th Army Air Force Base Unit”) in Culver City, California. On January 14, 1943, he was promoted to first lieutenant and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is the Army at Burbank, California.36 He returned to the First Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to captain on July 22, 1943.
In January 1944, Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in New York City to participate in the opening of the Sixth War Loan Drive, which campaigned for the purchase of war bonds. He was reassigned to the First Motion Picture Unit on November 14, 1944, where he remained until the end of World War II. By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the Air Force, including cockpit simulations for B-29 crews scheduled to bomb Japan. He was separated from active duty on December 9, 1945.
And no, I don’t think Reagan was a good governor or president, but give the veteran his due.
Quick. Before you go under for the third time. Do you and your successors hold said lifeguard harmless for any and all real or imagined failures to save you and from the consequences of such real or imagined failure or delay should such result in real or imagined harm, including but not limited to brain damage or chronic fear of the ocean?
Knock military experience all you like, but there is no substitute for having served at least a couple of years in the ranks. If one is to lead this country successfully against those who’s governing philosophies are antagonistic to ours, one should at least have some idea of the conditions under which our fighters operate and how to use diplomacy to avoid conflict.
Yeah, yeah, I know. One doesn’t have to be a fighter to know war is bad, but I believe one should have had at least some hands on experience before making decisions about national military policy.
Real fact: our town on lake Michigan had lifeguards on the beach for many decades, then the 80’s came and so did the lawsuits. Lifeguards are great, but they are not going to be able to save everyone especially when you have rip currents. The town lawyer advised to protect the city we get rid of the guards and unfortunately we did. People still try and sue the city for their own stupidity, but with little success.
I sometimes wonder if the problem with our nation is that almost without exception our legislators went to law school. Though, come to think of it, the very worst elected official from the last 100 years didn’t.

And the lawyer will always say, It was an act of God as to why that person drowned. No lawsuit here.

Well, that seems to be a good solution for overcrowded beaches. It should be used more often.

Fun fact. Ronald Reagan was a life guard when he was a young man.
When he was older he was a 4-F for WW2 because of his poor eyesight.
Things that make you go ‘Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.’

I would say that is a good move. But I would expect the beach owners would be the Lawsuit Lotto targets as they would have the bigger pockets!

There’s no point suing a lifeguard. They never have any money.
