I was a middle-aged Pennsylvanian before I ever learned there are bears in Pennsylvania. The staff at a Pocono resort had to warn the guests that a momma bear was raiding dumpsters with two cubs. A few of us hiked off to see what we could see but there was nothing . . . until we got back and found a huge pawprint in the mud near one of the resort’s outer buildings. Still haven’t seen one in PA in the flesh though.
Oddly enough I just read a story about a woman in Colorado who insisted on feeding the bears, buying huge bags of dogfood, etc., in spite of being fined by the county and warned by DRN and her family not to do it. She ended up getting killed and partially eaten by a bear. After she died, the bears went from house to house looking for food, causing a lot of damage, and it ended up with quite a few bears being killed because they were so aggressive. Do. Not. Feed. The. Wildlife.
I live in Easton PA – halfway between Philly and Pocono mountains along the Delaware river. I’ve seen many bears. The yearlings wander all over the hills looking for a territory. I know the local Game Warden. He is busy darting bears that have wandered into residential areas. He takes them up to the state game lands in the mountains. One yearling bear killed a dog. The dog was barking and snapping at the bear. It swatted the dog once with its paw and snapped the dog’s neck. You do not want to encounter a bear.
Really? you think bears are “cute” and want to go looking for them. I have read some really stupid comments but most here top them. Bears are HELLO Wild Animals. Even a black bear will attack a person. Now Moose, Buffalo, and Brown Bears one sees at national parks should never be treated as house pets and yet there are also a great many Darwin Award contenders getting out of their cars so they can get up close to the Wild Animals so they can take selfis with the “pretty animals” They would be the same idjits who get out of their cars at various Lion Country parks so they can take a selfi with a Lion. There is stupid and there is death wish stupid
TCO is definitely a thing. It explains many an impulse acquisition of puppies, kittens, bunnies and chicks (especially around Easter). (And many inanimate objects, too!)
