Elsewhere in the world, a mountain named Vesuvius has started rumbling.

Plug up one leak and another one sprouts up somewhere else in your neighborhood.

I don’t get why the boulder is so much smaller in panel 2 than in panel 1

Well, so ends one of the early “Existential Threats” to the planet. (Don’t worry, there’s an unending supply of these things.)

That is just going to make things worse later. You can’t hold back nature.

All he did was to convert one slow release of larval pressure to a gigantic explosion that’ll take off the top of the mountain.

But we really don’t know whether that will cause another leak—somewhere, sometime.

Of all natural disasters, I am most intimidated by volcanoes and tsunamis. If we are unfortunate enough to be in the way life from that point on will be short and brutal in the extreme. Even volcanic warnings can be horrible: in the book “The Day the World Ended” the author described the devastation of half the island of Martinique in 1902. Mud flows chased hordes of enormous centipedes and venomous snakes into the town of Saint Pierre about a day before a pyroclastic flow wiped it out.

Mathematically impossible. It should have gone up at least to 82% of its dropped height.

Remember that Little Dutch Boy who stuck his finger in the dike to stop the leak. Well this is more like Daffy Duck sticking his finger in Elmer’s shotgun.

This must be his own idea. The added heat has caused tectonic movement and have helped to activate some volcanic action in the area.
