Hope that kid is in shock looking at the dress shoes and not interested! No self respecting school-age boy would look their instead of the sneakers section!
Sneakers/“tennis shoes” were the most popular but we had to wear “black shoes” (i.e., dress shoes) at least half the time, because the podiatrists of America had all the parents convinced that if we wore sneakers too much, our feet would spread out all over the place and then no shoes would fit. The big thing then (1950’s and 1960’s) was that if we didn’t wear the right shoes, then later we’d have to wear “corrective shoes” (I do remember this being used as a threat back in the day).
I remember the sudden and absolute switch from x-ray machines in nearly every children’s shoe department and store to no such machines anywhere but medical facilities. Apparently someone commented on the cause of Marie Curie’s death.

Back when I was in school and dinosaurs roamed the Earth, I had to wear dress to school. (It was Catholic School.)
