Hopefully, this Ryder guy does not see Luann a a desperate woman. All she did was go ask for his phone number. And is ready to call him as she is walking away. Right now.
Max is awake in the first frame. Did go to the remember meceremony at localshelter tonight thanks to Jack’s cool T- shirt a couple days ago. Thanks Jack!
In the background of the first panel, is that a slimmed down Dez frolicking nekked in the dog park? ……
Also, Luann, stay away from the Fuze if you and this guy decide to get together someplace beside the dog park …. remember how that last date went when you went to the Fuze ….
I love how Jack and Luann are able to encourage and support each other. Puddles has eyes only for Jack (and I think Luann should do like him), how cute!
Luann and Jack are building a real friendship, supporting and looking out for each other. They seem at ease with each other. Romantic relationships do develop from good friendships, I see them together, eventually.
Why worry about a stud 40 feet away when she has one 5 feet away? Luann is so clueless in matters of love. She let Jack know she is interested and that will be that. But she can’t see the trees for the forest.
While I can see the humor in today’s effort. For me it falls flat…. because….. it is Luann who is saying the punchline, and this sort of “punchline” is so, so, so stereotypically expected of Luann that it actually feels rather disheartening rather than funny.
Any other character (male or female) in this comic could have said the same sort of line here….. and it would have been more funny, fun, and enjoyable for me….. because it is not a stereotypical behavior for them.
But….. for so, so many years, all that Luann has been portrayed as… is a female who is rather desperate for a relationship. But, for me, the break-up with Quill seemed like such a very good thing in Luann’s character development that the effort today feels like a significant regression. Luann simply needs to be herself….. and give thought to who she is and who she wants to be…. and just live.
Panel three is a stereotypical straight line-sarcastic punch line gag straight out of Greg’s gag basket. You can easily envision Luann and Bernice in Luann’s room, or kitchen, or at the Fuse mulling the slings and arrows of relationships. Here’s a typical:
A Luaniverse time warp seems to have occurred here. This should be Saturday’s strip. Today’ strip should have looked like Tuesday’s or Wednesday’s only with Kaylie being Ryder, etc. That would have softened Luann’s supposedly atypical behavior. Of course Luann’s behavior with Gunther in the Gulag prior to Bets was pretty atypical; except with Quill.
It appears more and more that the hiding under the bed arc was the last great fling for their relationship. The candle flared one last time and then extinguished. (sigh!)
Picture this scene, dull as dirt, but because of youthful hormones, they find the pursuit game exciting. 50 years from now, Jack will be urging Luann to call the dining room to see what kind of soup they are having for lunch.
notice how Puddles’ eyes match Luann’s. Now, is this the beginning of Luann becoming more assertive with men? Will this translate into assertiveness in other aspects of her life, like deciding a major in college?
Panel 1 song: “I was looking back to see if you were looking back to see if I was looking back to see if you were looking back at me….” (Anyone remember that oldie, but goody?)

Wow. THAT was very aggressive on Luann’s part. Green eyes, eh? Cool
And the guy is named “Ryder.” Sounds like a down to earth blue collar type of guy. Not unlike Brad. Double Cool.
One thing for SURE. Being a Mechanic, Ryder SHOULD know how to change a tire.
UNLIKE Jack………., ;)
