People think today’s kids should know basic math, but without the cash registers to tell them how much change it owed they are lost. I constantly run across kids, I have to tell them how much is owed. It’s basic math but they never use it and when they have to—look out. Of course a cashless society will soon erase this problem—or will it?
Even 28 years ago (when this particular cartoon was published) cash registers in fast food places would tell you how much change to return if a worker had correctly input the items purchased and the cash rendered.
Actually I am not sure it is because people do not know how to calculate change but because modern cash registers need to total the actual amount of business done during that shift. Therefore, why would anyone strain their brain to figure it out when the machine does it for them? Never mind any internet or power failures.

What the heck, Brad. They weren’t teaching common core math back then. Did you sleep through all your math classes?

I’ve never worked a register before. But don’t the newer ones log in cash received and calculate the change to be returned?
If they don’t they SHOULD.

Spoiler alert: I recollect the problem is actually not Brad. It’s the manager.

First comes training, then practicing, then real customers. Badgering your employee in front of customers does no one any good.

I hope present-day Brad doesn’t need math in his role as fireman / EMT…

Been there, done that. When I added the four cents, the clerk looked at it, added a penny to it, then the rest of the change.

It’s simple arithmetic, dumbo! You, know, like you “learned” in 4th grade?!

The change is 50 cents. I don’t even need a cash register to figure that out.
