What they DON’T tell you when you’re a teen getting them off, is that you really need to wear the retainers…..FOREVER. If not, your teeth will shift out of position again. Not as severely, but fast forward a few decades and you’ll see. I wore braces 50 years ago and I feel that I could actually use them again now. Just not sure I want the expensive or everything else that goes along with wearing braces. Trying to decide if it’s really important to me or not that my teeth are not movie-star perfect anymore.

A “retainer” is what friendly Mr. Dentist wishes he could have…preferably for a lifetime.

Hey, at least you can take retainers out. Well, actually when I had a bottom retainer, for a while that one was actually attached to the back of my teeth but then my dentist wanted me to ask for a removeable. Even with floss threaders, it was too hard to floss.

I hated braces… not for being made fun of or looking weird, since a large number of other 5th Graders also had them at the same time I did. I disliked the pain of getting them put on and subsequent tightening. I wore a retainer for a while afterwards, which was vastly better than braces, however I once broke off one of the hooks that hold it in place, and I was terrified I was going to be in big trouble (turned out to be no big deal)! The orthodontist said I didn’t need it anymore, after a year or less, so that was it, although my mother lamented for years that he should have had me wear it longer (my teeth got a bit crooked again, but they still look pretty good and haven’t given me any trouble).
