a little yeah but than she wouldn’t be doing her job ya know? also in 9 chickweed Edda is showing now. it’s just so weird to see her Preggers cause i’ve been reading 9 chickweed 25 or 26 years now and she was 12 when the strip started back than
This will be a real test for Luann. Does she agree with her friends OR does she defend Zebo’s discussion? Does Luann have any principles left OR has she been completely indoctrinated in the land of Zebo?
Not sure if Luann actually heard what Tara said – or Luann just perceived they are fooling around. Tara’s jab is not a big deal as long as Zebo doesn’t hear it. But very offensive if Zebo did hear it – as Tara is saying Zebo is all B.S. Tara is fun and mostly kind, but she does have a “tude” issue.
Note to Zebo: They are adults now. You’re not paying for their education, they are. If they don’t care about their grade, you shouldn’t have to either…F grades are appropriate.
Zebo: “If ‘Comedy-Time Theater’ has concluded, I would like continue the humble subject of still life. Otherwise there will be two comedians I know that will be repeating this course next semester!”
Interesting from Zebo, “molding” his students to see art certain ways. Seems he’d want see what they consider art so let them paint the still life as they perceive it and then as them to judge their own art.
I really like the way Zebo handles the classes and also see Tara and Nil become more and more friends. I’m just a bit worried about the possibility that Luann will become a sort of angry mom of the Art class. But the way she looks at his friends is a typical angry mom pose. I hope she’ll don’t become like Bernice.
College students have attitudes like this probably back to the first universities in Europe and Africa (yes Africa, ever hear of ancient Alexandria for example)? The dynamic between Luann and Tara, and Tara with Nil, and Luann being in a “higher” position with Tara in particular, is what is going to be interesting in this arc.
I’ve always admired the effort put into still life paintings. Not educated in arts but it’s always come across to me as the rendering of an object taken for granted given the lime light for all to see. It gives the mundane a depth that was always there but over looked because of how commonplace it’s become.
It’s like realizing a cliche is more than something that happens over and over and over again. It’s an important realization that occurs frequently enough to be noticed every time it does.
Well, as an artist most of my life, I actually understood what Zebo said. It does allow individual interpretation. Tara’s comments are uncalled for and get on my nerves. She’s not a favorite character. It will be interesting to see how TA Luann reacts.
The truth has a liberal bias. Can’t help that. As far as knowing more and more, about less and less, that’s how you become an expert in your field. It can be what makes you valuable to others, and motivate them to actually pay you for your advice. This appears to be a favorite argument by conservatives these days since one party tends to be more educated. Attack having education. And while I think everyone needs to be well informed, I REALLY could care less if my heart surgeon remembers “quantitative easing” from the econ class they had 30 years ago, nor is it the first thing I’d ask an architect who’s designing my house.
Yeah! Back in class!!! And, we are at Pitt CC! This should be a very fun week!
Professor Zebo’s pontificating is both a) very much overly garrulous, and b) also somewhat valuable and important. I think being able to hit both sides of this spectrum in a phrase or two is the hallmark of many professors!
[Cough]
[sputter]
[Squints eyes a bit, thinks about what I just said. Gets a furrowed brow.]
[“Harrumph!”]
In actuality, still life work can be and feel “banal” as can the perception of reality. But, as Prof. Zebo does suggest…. if you take the time/effort, you can however find even the initiallly “banal” can oftentimes offer something unique and deep.
* * *
Now…. Luann is flustered! I suspect she is both shocked (that’s *shocked, I say – Foghorn Leghorn) and flummoxed on what to do. Does she a) laugh with her friends superstitiously, b) defend Prof. Zebo, or c) tattle to Prof. Zebo.
In a best case scenario, Luann should IMO do a mix of “a” and “b”. But… “best case” does not often lead to “hilarity ensues” so we shall have to wait and see what transpires.
Margaretannehill – I’m sure it’s been pointed out that your remark is propagandistic. Also non-factual. There are lots of conservative colleges around. Liberal isn’t a negative—without early liberals you would not now have the right to vote. Nor would Chinese Americans. You probably benefit from programs started by liberals, or you will – social security and medicare. All liberals want is to give everyone a chance for a decent job, and fair treatment. You know—American ideals.
I hope we are not going to have a whole week in Zebo’s class devoted to student discipline and related funny business. This is art class. I just want to see their art work.
Ol’ Perfesser Prissy Lips is typical of his profession. Dismiss that which they believe is beneath them out of hand (“banal”) and expect their charges to fall in lockstep with their perspective, if they know what’s good for them. Suffice to say that the comment in the final panel says it all.
If one looks at the drawings the students made in the morning class, the bottle of wine was full. If you look at the bottle here in the afternoon class, it is empty. Apparently, Zebo had lunch between classes.
That’s a pretty pathetic Still Life set-up, though I know that art schools have minimal budgets and recycle such props endlessly. In a way, one must credit Zebo for being able to keep up his schtick class after class. He must find the average work boring and crappy.

Something tells Me that very soon, Luann is going to know what it’s like to be “Howie.”
But the question for this arc is: Will Luann become “drunk with power?” ;)

Luann is demonstrating the maxim that power corrupts, and absolute power ruins your sense of humor.
