My friend has a blind ferret. When his food is put down, he runs all the way down the hall from his room right to the dish, and there are 3 corners to navigate. Led by his sense of smell.
Our dog can smell an apple as soon as I take it out of the refrigerator while she’s laying down in the living room, because she knows she’ll get a slice.
There’s something fascinating called the famine reaction (if you are sitting doing nothing your body thinks there’s a famine and makes you want to eat anything in sight) https://www.news-medical.net/news/20131107/Diets-and-the-famine-reaction-an-interview-with-Associate-Professor-Amanda-Salis-University-of-Sydney.aspx
Gaining weight is simply caused by calorie input is greater than calorie output. If you eat more calories than you burn off…weight gain..for 90% of the population. This does not include medical anomalies.
There’s a product out for cats that is a set of little plastic containers that have a cloth “mouse” covering. The idea is to put their daily ration of food into these mice and hide them. Cats like to hunt and kill their food and it supposedly makes mealtime more adventurous for them.
Our dog heard the crinkling of the plastic bag when we took out bread slices to make toast. She was there even before we put the bread into the toaster because she knew that one slice was just for her… I don’t even remember how quickly she figured out that trick…but as she grew older, she didn’t rush that quickly into the kitchen, she waited until the toast was made and in pieces in her dish…
But only one—the “sit on your butt and play video games or staying on social media” lifestyles which are so prevalent today are substantive reasons too.

Treating poor Farley that way. Shouldn’t happen to a dog…

I loved making up names. “Bolus” was the perfect name for a dietician!

Food is only socially significant if there is just a little of it and you have to decide who gets the best and/or the most.

I had a girlfriend who used to “make each meal a unique challenge – an adventure” … and not in a good way.

If Farley is blindfolded, then why put the dog dish on a string?

With my mom each meal was a unique challenge and a huge adventure. Thankfully, I know how to cook.
