Luann will find a way to get Tara to explain things and not Zebo? Why? Zebo’s the teacher. He’s the one who’s taken all those courses on student psychology and learning methods. He should be the one to do it.
Excellent twist! When Zebo said to Luann, “You’ll find a way,” I’m thinking it’s Tara that will find a way (to explain it). We’ve already been shown that Tara’s very smart and can think on her feet. Alternately, Tara could be called upon by surprise to explain her work to the class and she gets totally humiliated and it takes her down a notch. Stay tuned…
Up watching Netflix so I get to comment really early in the day for the GoComics edition of Luann. So like I have been saying this arc is a combination of Luann’s personal growth as a future teacher, and the friendship, if that is what it is, between her and ms. dodgy, Tara. Zebo is a master college level teacher, Luann has to buckle up and face the situation. Friendship or professional honesty. Maybe hilarity will ensue too.
I think Tara will show. Actually, I initially sort of went along with the crowd on Zebo, but there appears to be more to his character than meets the eye. And I’m thinking more in a paternal/educator way. Now I don’t know in what direction K&G plan on taking him, but he could turn out to be an interesting addition to the strip. If he helps Luann to open her eyes and mind and see the possibilities (and not just in art), he would have a nice accomplishment – life mentor.
Luann, you could handle it something like this: “OK, students, today we will each have the opportunity to explain our efforts to the rest of the class. Tara, Prof. Zebo found your creation particularly interesting, so why don’t you go first?”
Given that the task was to “explore the banality of perceived reality while exploring the uniqueness of its deep essence”, while considering the “humble still life”, it is my opinion that one could make the argument that the attempt and (Zebo’s)implication of failure to “dutifully replicate” the still life exemplifies the exploration of the banality of perceived reality. The viewer understands implicitly that the artist is conveying the uniqueness of its deep essence by its very absence.
A few years back, there was a bit of a scandal (oh, the nostalgia for this being a scandal) when the National Gallery of Canada bought a painting of a red stripe on a blue background for C$250,000 (US$200,000).
Picture an Icelandic flag with no white and only the horizontal bar of the cross.
The artist was celebrated within the art community but we the public thought his intent was to cash in whilst mocking the art community.
Tara’s explanation will be something along the lines of “I thought the assignment was stupid so I created a garbage piece to reflect that. No effort, no thought, boom, I was done.” And that’ll be it.
I reject the notion that displaying good technique only is worth a C. What Zebo is telling Luanne is success as an artist lies more in selling the patrons on your “intent” and less on displaying any actual skill.
Luann shows she has nailed Tara with her “Good luck getting her to do that”. More generally, good luck getting Tara to do anything. I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t even show up to class after today.
YEEEEEEEES! HOORAY ZEBO! THIS IS AWESOME! Luann is the one who thinks Tara’s work has no any kind of value and now she has to convince her to explain it! This will be glorious! It is not important if it will be A + or F. The point is that they will have to talk a lot between them and so, implicitly, they will better understand what kind of friends they are. Maybe we will also know something about Tara’s life.
Luann is the one who initially had trouble with Zebo’s grade for Tara. He could of just said at that time,“Because I’m the teacher and I say so” but he actually, patiently, talked Luann through what he was grading on. While I believe she does understand about “intent” she disagrees that Tara HAD any intent at all. Zebo knows that to know the artist’s true intent, you ask. By having Luann do this seems fitting, because she is the one with the problem at this point. If Luann had said nothing all along, Zebo may have asked Tara during class himself to verify what thought she put into it, and adjusted the grade from there. Bravo Zebo!
Look at professors. Most do NOT teach. They have TAs to do that. Then when they get tenure, they do absolutely nothing yet still make over $100,000.00 per year. I was in the wrong profession.
I have a suggestion for Luann, but i would have told her if I was teaching the class (by the way TA’s at community college are not something I have seen, but I think it might be a good idea, in reality I might bring it up at my system). Anyway, assuming Zebo would back it up, and the students would get points for doing the presentation, she could just say that everyone has to come up to make a presentation on the meaning of their art, and fashion questions they have to discuss that would force the students to explain what they were trying to say, if anything, and why. Tara could not resist that. Now Nil, he would panic actually.
Tara will be happy to explain her project. She will use the same convoluted language that Zebo uses. No one will understand what she is saying, but Zebo will be pleased with her.
This shows has nonsensical all this “grading” is. There can be an infinite variety of subjective interpretations, anyone can just make it up as you go along, and it can still be internally consistent.
It seems Zebo said that demonstrating and conveying one’s intent is the laudable goal. If a student’s intent was to practice their drawing skills and replicate the still-life and he/she achieved that goal (the intent was clearly “conveyed”) why isn’t that worthy of a good grade? Now Zebo is basing his grade on what he perceives a student’s intent was and whether or not he likes it.
Why is Luann so eager to make Tara look bad? I would not treat a friend that way. She is determined to cause trouble for Tara. Luann should let Zebo do his job and grade all the artwork.
It won’t matter if Luann puts Tara on the spot tomorrow. Sociopaths always find a way to turn on the charm, and can weasel their way out of a mess by making others look responsible for their irresponsibility. I really dislike her character.
I have a feeling Tara is going to rise to the challenge. She’s used to getting A’s with little effort and views this art class as being no different from the rest. She may not say alot but probably she’ll make some profound statement that will win over Zebo.
Easy – during class, Luann gets the class’s attention, says that one classmate’s interpretation of the assignment was unique and asks Tara to explain what she did. It is up to Tara then to BS or tell the truth.
There are some here on the board that are toying with Zébo’s name, thinking it might be Ga Zébo, or something like that. In doing a little research, Zébo was derived from MAD magazine. Over there, he was still the zany art professor, but his name was slightly different. What was it, you ask?
Actually Nil did a much better job of exploring the banality of perceived reality, with his detailed sketch of a nostril, than anyone. It would have been nice if Zebo could have commented on his work.

Methinks Tara WILL explain her so called “art” to the class, however reluctantly.
But SOMEBODY is not going to like her “explanation.”
Luann should have kept her mouth shut and let her fair weather friend, Tara KEEP the failing grade.
It would have been a whole lot MORE “fun” to have Tara explain to the whole class whyshe got an “F.” ;)

So, how will Luann approach this?
a) will she pre-warn Tara ahead of class and meekly ask her to comply and go along with it?
b) will she simply (as I suspect Professor Zebo intends) guide and question students in class (including Tara)?
Which path Luann chooses will be revealing about how much she is learning to Professor Zebo.
