My cousin was visiting us. We prepared a salad for dinner. My wife went to the garden and pulled some chives to put on it. He complained, “You pulled them from the DIRT!”
She asked him where he thought vegetables came from. His response was “From boxes at the supermarket.”
We were pleased to see the cruise ship menu display strawberry shortcake for dessert. We were disappointed to be served a slice of dry cake with a red stain in the middle and a dab of cool whip.
Something about “canned” strawberries that turns one stomach.. the wrong way. Frozen is a much better alternative.. but those recently picked.. the best.
I have the luxury of living in a country – particularly in my province – where fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, etc. are not only plentiful but cheap. One doesn’t even have to go to the mercados ( markets ) as there are still many farmers and vendors who sell they wares door-to-door.
As a result, we never purchase frozen food – except ice cream. Visitors from the States are amazed at how different and how good the food tastes … because it really is fresh and not processed or grown by some mega-food conglomerate.
Or like my neighbor who ran a dairy farm. He left a pile of milk bottles next to the milking barn and a citified neighbor claimed he had found a cows nest.
When I was young, in a different century, I worked at a restaurant on the beach, which meant we had to serve good fish dishes, which our menu described as “fresh”. We served, instead, fish that had been frozen, and, when called on it, I was required to say, “but it was fresh when it was frozen”…Hope I never stop feeling ashamed for doing so.

Try frozen next time. May work out better.

If the bug is dead, they’re not fresh.
