It’s not real music…in fact, it really is just noise.

Then again, nobody saw Rock and Roll or Jazz coming either.

The trick always seems to be finding the treasure among the trash.

I can look at rap and appreciate the effort, skill and craft that goes into creating it, and acknowledge it as a legitimate art form… that I don’t particularly like. Kinda like a Rothko painting.

It’s incredibly liberating to realize that you don’t have to like something just because it’s art.

I’m with Puddleglum on this one. Rap is a particular art form growing out of a particular cultural framework which has now expanded and been taken in by the larger society. I suppose you could call it a cross between poetry and performance art with a musical soundtrack in the background. Straight music? Maybe not so much.

And like Puddleglum, acknowledging it as a valid art form does not mean I have to like it. Sort of how I feel about country music. Appreciate it as a unique American musical form but I sure cannot listen to it.

I expect to see some new rapper come along with the name, “Plain Brown”. Then we will know the rap fad is over.

Anyone who says all rap is garbage needs to see The Roots live. When I saw them, they did a cover of “Sweet Child of Mine” that made Guns and Roses sound like Josie and the Pussycats.

To label all music of a single genre as “bad”, “trash”, etc. is simply discrimination - there will often be songs and music you do like out of any genre, but you have to find them.

I’m not big into rap either but there are decent songs in that area and they can indeed qualify as art (subjective as art is) - the fact that they evoke such a strong reaction, however negative, is a sign of that in itself.

The most delicious irony here is that often the same people who complain about rap not being music then have to gall to argue that some non-rapping guys yelling and cussing about the same kind of issues is indeed music. The difference? Probably less effort went into the latter because they don’t bother to rhyme their lyrics as part of the genre - meaning rap generally takes more effort and skill.
