I actually thought this before. That the unused ornaments must be sad. Spend all summer in the hot attic, looking forward to the tree going up, but they stay in the box and go back up into the attic.
This was not a problem at my brother’s house. When his kids were little (up to about age 26), they insisted on putting every available ornament on the tree. It was a wonder you could see even the tip of a branch.
I can’t say when we bought the last ornament for our tree. We collected odd bits and pieces over the years. We’ve lost some due to attrition. However, mostly the tree is decorated with close to 70 years worth of memories (some ornaments were “inherited” from our parents.)
Not a few were handcrafted by our sons and by our granddaughters.

As pets and kids get a hold of the ones on the lower branches, the box gets emptier every year.

In our house there are more left in the box than on the tree. We’ve got enough for at least three trees.
