I would like to diverge somewhat from the general stream of thought here and opine that while Mr. Coyote’s plans and gimmicks are outrageously complicated and unlikely, Calvin’s basic strategy here is, I think, basically sane and sound. Perhaps he DID misunderestimate the maneuverability of a toboggan — it is NOT, after all, a P-51 Mustang — but perhaps his pilot just lacked the skills for the mission.
As commander, Calvin must take responsibility for failing to train his pilot and ideally make a practice run or two before embarking on the mission, but I will stoutly defend his tactics and intent.
You can steer a toboggan. The toboggan is being steered. Calvin can’t do it. A stuffed tiger cannot steer anything. Another example of the strange nature of Hobbes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobbes_(Calvin_and_Hobbes)#Hobbes%27_reality

You would think the snowballs would fall off the toboggan during the ride down, since he didn’t put them in a box secured to the toboggan.
