Camera angles! Light from the match showing just part of his face! Silhouette! Reflections of the street lights in the rain-soaked streets! Steam escaping from a grating! Surely just round the corner there is a flashing neon sign that says “Hot l”, because one letter has failed.Do I hear a muted saxophone in the background?
10 minutes travel time to, er, “passing” = 15 miles.
Even a cheapjack shamus like Cal should be able to suss that, but then there would be no need for a ramble in the rain-soaked alleys of that mean town.
Jack and Joe never meet because 2 miles from home Jack gets pulled over for going 60 in a 30, and by the time he gets done receiving his ticket, Joe is already to his destination.
I had a maths teacher who encouraged us to think about our maths problems as though they were detective stories. She told us that she used to read a lot of Agatha Christie, Edgar Wallace and Leslie Charteris. She said that we were to look at each problem and make sure that all of the evidence fitted it. Calvin doesn’t think that way and gets the problem’s solution completely wrong by thinking big.
I hope that nobody minds me saying that. It would be extremely surprising if Calvin got it right. I know he’s got maths problems right purely by chance on at least two occasions but these were the exception to the rule.
I know all comics are an art form, but Calvin and Hobbes takes it to another level. I hope Bill knows how much joy he has brought to millions of people.
As mentioned above this is a problem solved with algebra.
Calvin is 6 years old, that would put him in the 1st grade. He should be learning addition and subtraction. Algebra should be many years in his future.
15 miles. I’m pretty sure this was answered in the last 3 days, but there have been 442 comments, and I’m too lazy to read them all, then decide I can’t in good conscience answer the question because it’s already been answered. Thank you in advance for your understanding and forgiveness.

It’s the stuff that dreams are made of.
Specifically, those dreams where I find myself back in school with a test I haven’t prepared for.

Had Jack and Joe met before? Was it all pure chance or had they planned all this, maybe to give each other alibis?

This would make a good Mike Hammer episode. Que up the theme music.

Calvin really goes deeply into his word problems. I hope he is not asked to show his work.

And what about the Dame. What’s her story and why is she interested in Jack and Joe’s driving? Is she part of the nefarious DMV?

Head over and see that Derkins Dame and see what she knows about this.

ONLY way this could be better were if Calvin were less self-centered, i.e. begins too many thoughts in first-person singular.

Such a tragedy.
