I actually had a boss like that. He lived down the street from me and drove a 4 wheel drive truck. So when there was a big snow fall he would stop and pick me up. No snow days for me. He even offered to loan me his truck when he went south for a couple weeks every winter.
We hired a down-on-his luck guy once because he really needed a job. Since he didn’t have a car, we arranged to pick him up at a corner on the way to the store. It worked well till Friday when he got his first paycheck. We never saw him again.

I had a summer job in Tennessee back in 1956. The company bus picked us up in the AM and dropped us off after work. It was door to door.
