Okay, I draw and paint a little. I remember hearing other “artists” denigrating ol’ Bob because “He did a painting in half an hour”. I looked at this stuff and thought "Wow, he painted a background in half an hour.

Can’t help but wonder what Bob Ross’s soothing little paintings would’ve been like had he painted the Australian landscape … "I’m just going to add a sweet little drop bear to this tree … " ;)

YES!! Bob always drove me spare when he’d stick a tree in the foreground or throw in a cabin – I’d always react the same way as the woman! Bob Ross was a national treasure, and today I caught myself using the “Bob Ross voice” when brushing one of my cats. She and I had a good laugh about it. xD

Now we know where Georgia learned to tuck in as many tiny details as possible when she draws BCN! In my mind’s eye, I’m seeing Sophie in the Big Purple House also watching and taking notes.

I video taped about two dozen of his shows then transferred them to DVD when that format became available. I have not needed a sleeping pill since. Turn it on, lower the volume and let his voice cause me to drift away with dreams of Peapod and “happy little trees” and “there” and “just two hairs and air”. Me and the kids used to watch and count how many times he said “there” or “Happy little” something.

I have adored Bob Ross for years. Has anyone else seen the cartoon of a happy little bush painting a portrait of Bob? The bush and Bob’s hair are identical. I particularly like his stories about his little squirrel buddy.

I’d Like to Teach the World

I’d like to buy the world a brush

    To paint scene of love,

    With mountain scenes

    And flowing streams

    And fluffy clouds above

    …….

I’d like to teach the world to paint

    A perfect scene of peace,

    So full of joy

    With purrs employ,

    And smiles never cease!

    …….

    That’s the scene I’d love,

    What the world wants today,

Wish that’s how it would stay

    That’s the scene I’d love.

    …….

    That’s the scene I’d love,

    What the world wants today,

Wish that’s how it would stay

    That’s the scene I’d love.

    …….

Grab a brush in your hand,

    Let’s begin today,

With a brush in each hand,

    We can find a way!

    …….

I’d like to teach the world to paint

    A perfect scene of peace,

    So full of joy

    With purrs employ,

    And smiles never cease!

    …….

Except for the fact that I can’t paint a line.

This is funny. I got my first edits back from the editor, Emily, for my book. She was very positive on my work and writing style and gave me dozens of pages of notes and suggestions. Furthermore, she pointed out that her suggestions are just that, suggestions. There is no one perfect way to write.

Now, I digested these notes and suggestions just like the Woman in today’s strip…

WHAT? How can I cut this part it is integral to the story!…While you are critiquing my work, why don’t you just give me a paper cut and pour pickle juice in it…Yeah, yeah I can see that moving this would read better…But I want to introduce the character’s here…Australian Cattle Dog is a breed!…Oh okay, that’s a much better way to say it…But Joel speaks in my head in a West Virginia vernacular….Oh come on, this gives a wonderful back story for the whole world I am creating…That’s it, I am giving up and becoming a Monk…Yes, maybe moving it there would read better…I can’t write any better, I’m stupid!…Wow, I can add all kinds of detail here…GOOD IDEA!…This makes it perfect, you’re a genius Emily!…et cetera…

Marie (my wonderful wife), I need 5 double Martini’s RIGHT NOW!

All the emotional roller-coaster but without a little Pucky helping me through it. She said my book is definitely a cozy in style and length, but I am packing so much into so few pages that expanding some areas will make it read better. Because I have not been writing in the book since December, I can look at the book with fresh eyes. Emily’s notes will be integral in lengthening the book and making it read better.

Oh, I know that feeling when watching Bob Ross SO well! It says something about his ability that even when you thought it looked just fine before he started to add all that “extra” stuff the paintings still looked great when he was done adding said “extra” stuff.

Adding to the group who enjoy the calming voice, too. We’ve used him to calm down my cranky niece on occasion.

(I’d say he needs a bit more afro to be really recognizable, but he didn’t like being stuck with the hairstyle, so I think he’d approve of the shorter hairstyle used here.)

Akin to what Snowy&Finlay said earlier, I’ve witnessed hardcore sports fanatics be at their ‘utmost’ expressiveness after a deciding play, but more calm and reserved than this!! … It’s like watching The BIG GAME !! … Just imagine the commentary:

“Looks like he’s gonna paint the TREEEEE … Right … … THERE !!”

"OOOHHHH !!! … That could COST ’im!! :)

Look, a drill sergeant teaching painting!

I actually recently just learned that Bob Ross had been a sergeant in the Air Force where he was anything but how he appeared on his show. He decided he didn’t want to be the person he’d been in the Air Force when he started the show. Of course today, he probably have a painting show where he’d be screaming at other painters and the show would be a hit (remember, his painting show is reruns).

Georgia left this comment "We go now live to BREAKING CAT NEWS! …Is there anything more soothing than Bob Ross’ voice? I owe how I paint trees, skies, shrubbery, fields, water—landscapes, really—to him. We couldn’t afford art lessons when I was little, but my Nana Dee Dee had PBS! I still put him on often. (In fact, we fell asleep to him painting “Mystic Mountain” last night when the Boy woke up not feeling well around midnight and joined us in our room).

There are always “happy little trees” jokes about Bob Ross, but this has been much closer to my experience watching. An emotional roller coaster of gentle life advice dispersed during high stakes painting decisions. It always felt like that precious little cabin was about to RUIN EVERYTHING—and then he’d step back from the canvas and, well hey, it all turned out ok. In fact, it turned out great! Bob Ross didn’t just make art lessons more widely available to the public, he also taught us how to deal with (and accept) the unexpected. How to roll with a mistake and make it beautiful.

    He was the best"
